Hackensack History / Hackensack Jazz: Van Gelder/Blue Note
« on: March 20, 2005, 10:23:03 PM »
My brother told me that many important Jazz and Blues musicians recorded in Hackensack. Rudy Van Gelder's Blue Note Records was in Hackensack somewhere.  Does anyone know where?

Who recorded here?  I know there is a Jimi Hendrix Album called "Hackensack Blues".  Is that a Van Gelder project?

More about Van Gelder and Blue Note here

Cook says the Blue Note sound was due in large part to engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who set up a studio in his parents' living room in Hackensack, N.J. "There's just something about Blue Note's mixes, the way Van Gelder manage to balance loud instruments and soft instruments in such a way that for the first time, in many cases, you're hearing the bass on jazz records and you're hearing the different levels of drum work between the drums and the cymbals. For their time, they are remarkable sonic documents."

Thanks for any follow up.

The book is 151 pages with 3 to 5 pictures per page.

All pictures are b/w since they are historical in nature and not "colorized".

It's hardcover and very durable.

Table of Contents

1. Main Street
2. The Green
3. The Court House
4. The Neighborhood
5. Schools
6. HHS Sports
7. The Hospital
8. Serving the Public

I highly recommend the book.  Besides, the proceeds go toward scholarships, so it's a great cause.  The people who worked on this should be commended.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Blue law exceptions (Can sell on Sunday)
« on: March 19, 2005, 05:27:30 PM »
I found this definition online:

blue laws
n. state or local laws which prohibit certain activities, particularly entertainment, sports or drinking on Sunday, to honor the Christian Sabbath. They were employed in the New England colonies controlled by the puritans who kept the Sabbath sacred. "Blue" was slang for puritanical. In most cases blue laws have been repealed, but vestiges remain at least informally.

The other slate running is "Community and Recreation."  This ticket consists of Freddy Jones, a salesperson and Weona Mercedez Dean, a founder of New Jersey's "Juneteenth".

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Teterboro Airport
« on: March 18, 2005, 07:15:30 PM »
Oh, and one more thing:

This is from The Herald.

"increased security measures implemented at large commercial airports have not been implemented at smaller general aviation airports, like Teterboro. Noncommercial airplanes and helicopters could become the new weapons of choice for al-Qaida."

Wonderful.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Teterboro Airport
« on: March 18, 2005, 06:45:39 PM »
It just keeps getting better...

FAA warns Teterboro pilots

Maybe someone can answer this:

Aside from serving as an airport for organ donations (a worthy cause) how does this airport benefit the same people it threatens and annoys?  I understand that ordinary people have to tolerate some minor inconveniences for the sake of commerce and industry, but no one can tell me (and I've been asking) how Teterboro serves folks like me and you.

From what I'm hearing, the health and safety of a highly populated region (not to mention the quiet enjoyment of property) is compromised because Eminem, Ted Turner and Martha Stewart don't want to use Newark Airport when they go skiing at Telluride.   I'm sick of it.

I can live with Newark Airport.  I derive a benefit because I use it.  But if rich, inconsiderate celebrities and business people want to use Teterboro because it's "more convenient" then they can pay my property taxes via a whopping airport safety/convenience surcharge.

The Port Authority spokesperson said: "We're supportive of any measure that will enhance increased safety in the skies."   Why not impose a surcharge that discourages frivolous usage?

Hackensack History / Re: Brewster Mansion (Prospect Avenue)
« on: March 18, 2005, 05:54:50 PM »
The following passage is from Michelle's original email to me wherein she attached the picture of the Brewster Mainsion.

As a child I used to slow down on my bike past the Brewster and watch it each and every time I passed by on the way to my friends house. Embarrassing to admit it now, but at the time I built up a lot of fantasies about that house...

Looking back at it now, I am trying to realize just why it stuck in my imagination and in those of my contemporaries

It evoked fairy tales, history, and hauntings. The grounds, the hedges around it hiding it from the street - Gracious living of both the Tudor age thru the 1920's.... (Titanic era). It was timeless and for whatever reason apparently resonated with those who saw it. (More than the other two mansions that abutted it equally as beautiful in their way which are forgotten, at least to those to whom I mention them).

The grounds behind the Brewster, extending way back behind it were stunning even after years of neglect.  Anyone who has ever tended a garden and  left it for even one season knows what this means.

The Brewster Gardens:  Winding paths thru the woodland. A ornamental pond...A wishing well, each turn in the path leading to something new and unexpected, a new 'room', a new and unexpected vista.  Whether well-tended or a forgotten garden;  Those gardens were exceedingly well-planned!

It was abandoned for quite a few years before it was torn down.  When I was eleven, I explored the house and grounds right before it was razed. Even then, torn apart and vandalized, it lived up to my expectations.

Years later, I started a career in the arts.   It's likely that the mansion was the reason I went into this field.

The Brewster Mansion, for whatever reason, stuck in my imagination.
It is a tragedy that that house and grounds are gone.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Who uses Hackensack Now?

Somebody recently pointed out to me that many people who moved from Hackensack frequent the site to try to renew old acquaintances and learn about what's happened to old familar places like the Brewster Mansion and Maplecrest Beach.

Welcome Back to Hackensack!
