Title: Anybody see these things over Hackensack yesterday?
Post by: BLeafe on May 02, 2010, 05:20:38 PM
This was at about 9:15am. I think they took off from Teterboro because I saw them go back there later. If so, they came north and then turned east before Passaic St. I didn't see them until they were past the Hackensack river, but I sure heard their very distinctive engine sounds.

The video has a very dark spot in the middle. It's from shooting at too slow a shutter speed at a too-bright sky. Because I was using a monster lens and was shooting at 96x, I was trained on a pinpoint of sky and if I tried to change the shutter speed, I would have lost the visual. Better to have a faulty visual than none at all.

By the time you see them bank to the right, they're probably past the Hudson River. With binoculars, I could see them behind Manhattan heading south.

Later that morning, I heard them again and took a couple of slide stills as they headed toward Teterboro.

Anybody know what these upward-propped aircraft are called?

I saw these yesterday flying over Hackensack.   Looked like a scene from Avatar.

Ospreys at Teterboro.  Someone else posted about it too, here (http://helicopterforum.verticalreference.com/helicopterforum/index.php?/topic/13098-the-movie-avatar-osprey-type/).

Here is a picture of one taken yesterday (from Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/31253934@N07/4568858363/)).

They were at Teterboro last year. Click here to see several good interior/exterior shots (http://nycaviation.com/forum/usmc-v-22-s-teb-t15885.html).

More about the osprey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-22_Osprey).

They were at Teterboro last year.

I saw them then. They had something to do with a ceremony for the dedication of a ship on the Hudson during Fleet Week, I think. When they were done, they came in from the north and flew right above the PV RR tracks and Linden St, heading south toward Teterboro.

The Ospreys are controversial. A number of crashes and deaths have occurred involving these military aircraft. I believe The Daily Show recently had the author of a book about them on for an interview.

Last Saturday, I heard the sound of an Osprey and - sure enough - one was coming from the north, following Rt 17 into Teterboro.

Today, I heard one just after noon. It followed the same route. 10 minutes later, the same thing..........and then again and again.

There can't be 4 of them - maybe one was circling the area or giving tours. In any event, that meant there was an Osprey at Teterboro and I wanted to get some pictures.

I drove down Huyler St, crossed Rt 46, and continued down along the eastern edge of the airport.

There I saw.................FOUR OSPREYS!

Usually, there's nowhere to park there, but I found a lot with 3 or 4 cars parked in it by a fence close to the planes. I fully expected someone to come out of a building and start yelling at me..............nothing.

I REALLY expected someone on the tarmac - which was just on the other side of the fence - to chase me away when I started taking pictures from the fence with a full-size camera and a cellphone cam..............again, no problem.

The cellphone was limited in what it could do, because using the digital zoom makes the pictures look like crap. It's really only good for close shots and this was not close enough.

(Remember when buying a camera or camcorder: forget the useless DIGITAL zoom..........it's the OPTICAL zoom that's important)

The first picture is the only one where I didn't use the digital zoom, so it's the sharpest. I could fit almost 3 of the aircraft in the frame. The 4th was parked over to the right - closer to Rt 46.

At one point, about 30 airmen left the planes and walked across the tarmac and into a building. You can see 3 of them in the last picture, which looks as if I was hiding in the bushes (I wasn't). Rt 46 is in the background.

On a humorous note, I saw a quick photo shoot going on near the front of one plane. The subject was taller than everyone else and was in full uniform.

It was Mister Met. Let's see where those pictures pop up.

I think I got a shot of it with my adult camera, but I'm still shooting slides, so it'll be a while before I see those shots.

(5:23pm - I just saw one coming in to Teterboro following the same route as above - a fifth one? I'm guessing they're in the area for Memorial Day weekend events.)

I don't know if you heard about this yet, but an Osprey caused injury to 10 people in Staten Island this morning.

Just before 12:30pm today, I heard an Osprey coming back to Teterboro. I don't know if it was the same one, but I tried to get a video of it as it went by the top of our County edifice for jurisprudence.

From my living room, this is a very difficult angle to video from, especially since there was no time to open windows and screens for a clearer shot. On top of that, the screen had the sun shining on it.

I shot this on VHS and ran it through a VCR and onto my TV screen, which I video'd with my cell cam.

Despite all of that, this two-dimensional optical illusion still looks slightly scary.
