From the largest and most comprehensive cartographic collection in the world, Zazzle and The Library of Congress bring you this commemorative poster print featuring a panoramic view of the city of Hackensack, New Jersey was originally drawn by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1896. The map identifies the street names and points of interest in Hackensack more than a century ago. The printed detail is outstanding.

This print measures 29"x23" and is printed on heavyweight poster paper.

These reproductions are a dime a dozen (not literally) on eBay and have been for a while. You can almost always find one if you want one, but in case someone isn't aware of them and wants one, here's the info for future reference.

They come is various sizes and prices and have a greenish color to them. I got a white one about a decade ago and it hangs in my hallway. It's an interesting piece with old street names and almost no houses on the Hill. It's odd to see the "Y" of Euclid Ave at its western end and not see a single structure anywhere near it.

The map is surrounded by illustrations of old residences, businesses, churches, and other structures and is really a pretty neat piece to have.

I'm only going to post about it this one time, so if you want one someday, just search "hackensack map" or "hackensack 1896 map" (without the quotes) in eBay's search box.

Hackensack Discussion / Swans Sighting
« on: May 31, 2009, 12:43:00 PM »
This morning, from my apartment, I saw 4 swans in the Hackensack River (at low tide) at the northern tip of Foschini Park.

In my 21 years here, I've seen egrets, ducks, hawks, and too many geese there, but never swans.

Is this an unusual sighting?

free shipping. good condition. 10 by 7 inches this is a photo album, a lady named Edna Gerecke of New Jersey took pictures and then put them in the album with commentary. for example there is a 'statue of Hackensaki Indian, municipal bus terminal, Hackensack. on the same page "The bells of Corpus Christi, Hasbrouck Heights." most of he pictures in the album are from New Jersey. One of my favorites are pictures of "Elephants in the Mounts back of Nyack. included in the album are pictures of her grandfather in a casket at his funeral as well as his grave in a cemetery and lots of flowers. another favorite of mine is their 1929 Auburn car. first time I ever saw an Auburn! really fascinating. but about half the pictures are not identified. still neat. some of the pages in the album are loose.

There are lots of cards whose images were taken from this area, but I don't think I've seen this one before.

Rare or not, this guy charges too much for a card ripped out of a photo album.

Seller's description:

4 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches, "compliments of Tidewater Coal & Supply Co., H.B. Ferber, President, Hackansack, NJ." with 1923 and 1924 calendars. has all sorts of information in front, then date pages. Man went to work for Corbin Sedan Co., and last half filled in with information about how he traveled and how much spent. for example on October 23rd, he went, "Long Island run - about car ferry 60 cents." fascinating.

One of the entries is for Charles Goddard of 15 Linden St - the man who owned the 1908 diary that the same seller has up for auction. 15 Linden is across the street from Comfort Coal. Is there a connection between Tidewater Coal and Comfort Coal?
