Hackensack Discussion / Closed Union St Gets Gas
« on: July 30, 2009, 04:39:57 PM »
I first heard the jackhammers on Union St last week when this gas pipeline project was south of Passaic St. Today, it was in front of my building at Union and Ward.

It will make a left onto Anderson St and then a right onto Pangborn Pl and will probably end up somewhere near Ogden, Utah, when it's done.  ;)

Here are some cell pictures I took this afternoon:

Assuming this IS Hackensack, my first inclination would be to say "State St", but the stores across the street make it look like Main St. However, I have no idea if that store is one that was ever on Main.

Anybody have a clue?

I wonder what they broke ground for with this little thing................an anthill?

Seller's description:

1947 commemorative cover for the beginning of experimental helicopter airmail service

in New Jersey.

U.S. airmail envelope cancelled at Hackensack, New Jersey on January 6, 1947.

Backstamped on arrival the same day at Newark, New Jersey.

Cover is addressed to President Harry Truman.

Attractive cachet.

It also has been signed by the Hackensack Postmaster. There's an interesting line in the graphic: "Experimental Flights Via Hackensack Municipal Bus Terminal to Newark Airport, NJ".

How did that work? Was there a helipad at the bus terminal? Was mail collected at the bus terminal for copter flight to Newark?

Well, that's what the seller says this is, though I don't see anything that indicates that this has anything to do with a phone company or is even in New Jersey.

Seller's description:

TELEPHONE COMPANY-HACKENSACK, NJ CONSTRUCTION GANG

WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DRIVERS, THE FIVE WORKERS ARE IDENTIFIED. ALTHOUGH THE INK HAS WORN OFF THE PHOTOGRAPH THE INDENTATIONS ARE STILL CLEARLY VISIBLE. THE OVERALLPICTURE FRAMING SIZE IS 8 X 10 THE PICTURE ITSELF IS ABOUT 5 X 7. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT GENERATION THIS PHOTOGRAPH IS. IT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL BUT SHOWS AGE, AND YELLOWING

I just got some slides back that I shot on the 4th of July after Hackensack's fireworks were over.

This view from home shows the Empire State Building on the left, the Macy's fireworks on the Hudson River, the back end of Bergen Community College's Ciarco Learning Center on Passaic St (bottom center), and the Berry St side of the Oritani Bank building (bottom right).

I haven't seen any pictures of the mural here, so the cell phone and I hiked over there and took these:

NOT our city, unfortunately. This is an early 70s British band named "Hackensack" that few people in the US have ever heard of. Hey - if there's a current pop band named "Teaneck", why not an old Brit acid/blues band named "Hackensack"? What's next - a rap group named "Ho-Ho-Kus"?

These are two SEPARATE auctions:

1. http://xrl.us/HackensackCD1 ("GIVE IT SOME")

2. http://xrl.us/HackensackCD2 ("LIVE THE HARD WAY")

Seller's descriptions:

1&2. Here is your chance to own one hard to find release. If your into that heavy psych / acid blues rock sound from the early '70's then Hackensack is a must! This is such an exciting release. If you like Groundhogs, Leaf Hound, Cactus or Buffalo then your going to love this hard rockin' release.

1. Previously unreleased material recorded by this Nicky Moore fronted powerhouse outfit recorded between 1969 and 1972 as demos for a debut album on Island Records which was eventually aborted. Also includes other rare tracks and notes from Nicky himself. Much more powerful than their only issued album "Up The Hardway".

2. 1973 live recordings from Swiss radio by this heavy UK early '70's outfit. One of the heaviest live acts of the era. Includes bonus tracks from a gig in Nottingham (also from 73).

1&2: Here's what one reviewer had to say about Hackensack:

Formed by Nicky Moore in 1969 Hackensack were considered one of the heaviest live bands of their day. They only released one album (on Polydor) during their lifetime. Over more than 270 gigs they built up a small but loyal following but weren't able to generate sufficient revenue to continue as a viable project. Their sound was a heavy blues / rock mix and Up the Hardway is highly regarded amongst collectors and very collectable. Pye Records recorded a live album at the Cavern Club, Liverpool in 1973 but it remains unreleased to this day. When the band split Majors joined British Lions and Moore formed a band called Tiger before finding some success with first Samson and then Mammoth. Simon Fox drummed with Be Bop Deluxe. An album of unreleased material from 1969-1971 Give it Some was released in 1996 as was Live the Hard Way which featured live material recorded for Swiss radio in 1973 and part of a live show in Nottingham, England in the same year.

I'll omit the track listings for both. They're in the auctions if you want them. Instead, I'll put up a 1972 poster that shows that they opened for Mott the Hoople.

I have the "Give It Some" CD. My advice? Save your money. Trust me.

I guess the seller realized that a $10.00 a card starting price wasn't cutting it, so he's just added 2 more to the package: Holly's and the YMCA.

White Manna, City Hall, the Johnson Library, and the Hackensack Trust Building on the SE corner of Main and Mercer - 4 nice unused and undated cards, but not as rare as the seller thinks (except maybe for the White Manna one) and not worth the $40 he's starting the bidding at.
