Even with 14-degree temperatures and single-digit wind chill, I got a little cabin fever last Sunday and decided to go out and catch up on the progress of a couple projects.
I figured that since it's been months since I shot whatever was going on at the Midtown Bridge, its replacement must be up by now, but as I approached on the Approach, it was obvious that there was nothing to see, so I made the mandatory U-turn at the Ice House and headed up to Moore Street.
Lots of stuff going on in that neighborhood. But first..............
1,2. I walked over to the old Oritani FC site and took a shot through the fence at the corner of E. Camden and River and did a 3-pic stitch closer to Moore St (and over the fence).
3. Back up on Moore, I shot this 2-pic stitch from the parking lot behind Main St businesses and just south of the library.
4. Since this project wraps around to Main St, I walked toward E. Salem and took this shot on Moore to include the Wells Fargo Bank.
5. I took this crappy 2-pic stitch at Main and Salem. My shooting hand was frozen and it came out a bit lopsided (the stitch - not my hand). Straightening it out in post production chopped off the very top and most of the street. Better that than my finger.
6,7. Continuing with the wrap-around shoot, I made a 2-pic stitch from Moore and E. Salem and a 3-pic stitch from Moore, between E. Salem and E. Camden.
Enough! The cabin fever has been chilled from my body. I need to go home, warm up and take.........
8. ..........a crappy shot of what the Main and E. Salem part looks like from my living room WITHOUT cutting part of the top off.

I went for a nice, long walk on Main St yesterday and decided to check up on a bunch of projects, starting at 76 Main and working my way north:
76 Main
1. I took a 2-pic stitch through the back fence and it looks pretty much like it did a year ago, except there's a hole on the Main St side of the mural (you can see a parked car's sunlit taillight through it) and a couple of panels are off the Bridge St side and thrown on some debris.
2. A closeup stitch of those panels
3. The credits panel - has this been here all along? I've never seen it before.............it looks like it could be displayed better.
The hole at Main & Mercer
1,2. Also looks the same as last year
210 Main
1,2. Not much change to see on the outside. I'm sure it's a different story on the inside.
Main/Salem/Moore
1-4. Front, back, inside and in-between all look quite different from my earlier post of two weeks ago.
Current on River/Old OFC site (continued in the next post so as not to exceed post's file size limit)

These were all taken last Sunday and will be split into 2 posts:
The Hole - 1 still and 2 stitches
147 Main - 1 stitch (what's supposed to be built here?)
210 Main - 5 stills, including 2 of the FRONT of the bank that someone was concerned about. It looks fine.
Main/Salem/Moore - 7 stills
Current on River - 8 stills, 2 stitches

Main/Salem/Moore - 7 stills
Current on River - 8 stills, 2 stitches (#2118 shows what's at the very top of that huge crane and in the last image, the telephone wires don't line up.....it's a big glitch, but it's better than the previous attempt that cut a moving car in half)

It's short and - please - no jokes about Hu Flung Dung.

From two days ago:
1. Waiting for the top piece to be lowered (hey - what's that guy in the lower right doing?)
2. Daring laddermen............especially the guy on the right
3. King Kong of New Jersey

(Although the total photos file size is within the per-post limit, it won't work for some reason, so I'm splitting them up again.)
I took another projects walk last Sunday to check on progress (or lack of same):
1,2. The Record - No recent activity. The fencing was put up a couple of weeks ago, but if you recall, the 395 Main fencing went up 3 months before any demolition began, so it could be a while before the action starts. The sign in front of the building indicates that asbestos remediation may be taking place now.
3. Main & Mercer
4,5. The hole at Main & Mercer - Stitches looking west and north.............still no vertical construction. You know the deal with stitches……..click to enlarge and scroll away.

10-13. Main/Salem/Moore Street projects images - taken from Foschini Park, corner of Main/Salem, Salem between Moore and River streets, Moore Street
14. Slightly redundant
15. Moore meets Salem
16. Salem meets Main (an interesting contrast)
17. You tell me.
18. I hate to say what this looks like, but I DID take my hat off and bow my head when I worked on the picture.
19. Colors, geometry, heavy metal..............what's not to like?
20. From the SE corner of Camden and River............starting to take shape. Let's change the name of E. Camden St to Current St: "The Current on River at Current and River".

I took these from home yesterday morning. The second one is a 2-pic stitch.

Sunday's temperatures were tolerable and I was overdue for another projects update, so off I went to shoot Current on River, Moore/E. Salem/Main, 210 Main (front and back) and The Hole at Main and Mercer combined with 147 Main across the street. Filesizewise (not a real word), I'll have to make a post for each of the four topics.
CURRENT ON RIVER
All the pipes you see in the first three shots weren't there last time I visited. Anyone know what this particular area is to become (or what is shown in the seventh picture)?
Click to enlarge all horizontal images and scroll the last two photo stitches from left to right.

MOORE/E. SALEM/MAIN
The rear entrances of some of the Main St stores (third and fourth images) are more interesting than the front entrances (a mop over the door that's held open with a rope AND a sign that gets the street name wrong?).
Speaking of getting things wrong, the last image is a failed photo stitch that's so bad, it's kind of comical.

The Hole at Main and Mercer & 147 Main
1. Stitch looking west from Moore St
2, 3, 4. Three things I hadn't seen there before
5. Looking northeast from Main St
6. Meanwhile, directly across Main St: all this piping has been added since the last time I was here. Anyone have any idea what's coming to this space? I'm guessing that the McCrory 5 and 10 Cent Store sign is hidden again for another century.

150-170 Main: 382 units over 7000 sq. ft. retail. They started pouring concrete footings today (finally).
149 Main: 72 units over retail. They'll make an effort to replicate the old Woolworth's façade.
Thanks for the photo updates!

Last Sunday, it was still too hot out, but I went over to the Current on River site anyway because a lot has changed since I was last there.
1. Starting at River and Berry, I took this almost-all-encompassing shot.
2, 3. Almost to and at River & Camden
4. While I was on Camden, I took this oh-by-the-way shot of the project on Moore St.
These are the stitches I took.........
5. On Berry
6. On River (too close, too wide and glitchy)
7. On River near Camden
8. On Camden between Main and Moore

Will tenants be able to see the river or just River Street and and the Toyota dealer? Maybe from the top floors.
-
Probably not the north-south part of the river on the east side of Foschini Park until the sea level rises, but maybe a bit in the winter, sans foliage.
The only visual I can offer you is the first picture below which I took from the second-floor roof of the Johnson Library during the demolition of C-on-R's predecessor, the Oritani Field Club. You can see some of the east-west segment of the Kipp's Bend section of the river, which might look a little better (minus the 90-bazillion cars) from the top floors - especially from residences closer to Berry St.
On a sort of reverse-related note, I will start to slowly lose MY view of the entire Kipp's Bend probably beginning next week, as the 389 Main Project has started to emerge from its basement (second photo).
I'll be posting about it in the "Tracking the 395 Main St rehab project" thread, starting with its next post.
And - yeah - I know I have to change that original street number in the title when I get the time and inclination (I like “395” better - it was the address of the previous Main/Ward corner building - than “389”, which reminds me of big old Pontiac engines from the ‘60s).

This post contains 15 images - 12 of whch are from the Current on River project. The other 3 are oh-by-the-way-the-Moore-Street-project-is-practically-next-door images, so let's do those first:
1-3. Not to sound dismissive or anything, but since I parked on Moore south of Salem, I had to walk north on Moore to get to Current on River and these 3 shots were readily available, so.....................
4. The reason I went to Current was because of this shot I took from home earlier that morning. Oh, no - were more floors being added? I needed to speak with someone there.
5. After my long hike of a whole block, crooked Current was in my sights (I could straighten it out a bit, but then I'd lose the top of the crane - it's bad either way).
6. A different, closer angle of what I had seen earlier from my living room
7-13. My usual clockwise shoot around the site. By the way, in #10, southbound traffic on River St is being stopped temporarily while a large vehicle utilizes the street to get from one part of the building to another. The is one of the reasons why there have been delays for the last few weeks for southbound traffic there.
14. Construction fever has spread across E. Berry St to the east entrance of the Giant Farmers Market, as seen in this 2-photo stitch. In the sequence of events, this should actually follow #8.
15. The last thing I usually do here is a 3-photo stitch of the SW corner of the site, standing on E. Camden St near the side of the library. The two gentlemen in the hard hats confirmed that what you see here is, indeed, the top floor of the building, so there should be no more loss of view from my apartment - at least from this project.

Four shots from 3 projects:
1. The very first shot of the 435 Main (former Holman Moving) project, taken across Anderson St from the Second Reformed Church's parking lot. The crane's been sitting there for a couple of weeks and the sheeting (asbestos remediation?) was only there the morning I shot this and gone by afternoon.
2. Current on River from home
3. The Tyvek-ed Current on River
4. 240 Main

The Hole (Main and Mercer)
There's finally a bit of verticality emerging from The Hole (a name change may be in order soon).
These three stitches were taken on October 25 when I was on the block shooting the furniture store fire aftermath the next morning. The first two stitches were taken while bending over a concrete barrier on Mercer Street and trying to keep myself from falling, while dealing with a wind-blown tarp over the fence (all with one hand) and shooting through holes in the moving tarp AND between links in the fence, while trying to take shots that would line up well enough to stitch together (all with the other hand). Much to my surprise, it worked!
The third stitch was posted previously in the 153 Main St fire thread, but since the majority of it shows The Hole, it belongs here too.
Current on River
The Current on River shots were taken between October 26 and November 7, both from home and on the site. The sixth and seventh C on R shots show some progression as that small top wall is being constructed around the perimeter. The ninth C on R shot shows that the Camden St side of the library is now a construction loading zone while the tenth C on R image offers a possible hint of what the building's exterior will look like..............unless "face brick" is a misnomer.
I particularly like the third C on R shot because it looks like all of Manhattan sits/fits on top of the project.

8. Three projects seen from lower Moore St (l-r): 210 Main (bank), 240 Main (wraparound Main-Salem-Moore) and The Current on River at the end of Moore on Camden (and River St).
9. Insulation all over between 210 Main bank (rear) and its next-door neighbor.
10. This welcomed people at that next-door neighbor (I think).
11. Messy Moore St sidewalk
12. An alley I hadn't seen before next to/south of The Arc (two joined pix).
13,14. Main-Salem-Moore wraparound
Current on River
15. C on R (and 210 Main), as seen from the river at FDU
16. The "front" at Camden & River.
17. What does this say? "Call"? The first thing the chemist side of me saw was "CaCl", which is an incorrect chemical formula for calcium chloride (CaCl₂). Below the sign are sacks of Quikrete concrete. Calcium chloride is a concrete accelerator that speeds the rate of set, so maybe the sign DOES says "CaCl". Any other suggestions?

1. What I saw from home: The Cranes (210 and 170 Main - the Bank and the Hole - but what's happening on that taller, Main St-facing part of the bank?
2,3,4. I went over there and saw these curved steel beams on the ground on the Moore St side.
5,6. I also saw a sign I hadn't seen before...............and Oratam on State St, shot through a closed-off alleyway on Moore St between 210 and 214 Main
7,8,9. After I got home, I saw the old bank vault open up and show what the curved beams were for.
Reminds me of an old Jefferson Airplane album called "Bless Its Pointed Little Head".

They're in the process of putting together that crowning sculpture on the front rooftop of the old bank building, so if you want to get some shots before it's done.............
You'll need to put some distance between you and the building to see anything - that's why I'm staying home to shoot it.
-
great shots, thanks for documenting the construction. And I see that the Current On River will not block your rooftop view of Manhattan. I'm sure you are happy about that. It's still too close to River Street, imho. I hope the proposed redevelopment of the Toyota property is not going to be so close to River Street. The Board just needs to stand up to them, and say "NO", we need at least 15 feet set back from the sidewalk, and 20 feet setback from the curb.
-
These are 18 pictures taken over the course of 7 1/2 hours - from 8:40am to 4:10pm - that document each step of the construction of the front banktop sculpture. I tried to get each steel beam being craned from the Moore St side to the Main St side, being placed, and the look of the piece after each addition. Rinse and repeat.
Of course, I couldn't sit by my window all day and I did miss a couple of the westward cranings, but then used the about-to-be-placed shots as the before images.
I'm not sure if the work has been completed and I wish it was a sunnier day for better shots, but I'll trade that for not having to trudge over there and stand around all day in the cold and be too close to see very much to shoot.
The sequence:
1. The main component arrives.
2. Finished. This shot wasn't taken until 2 hours later as the crane held the piece in place while it was being secured.
3. The first addition
4. Finished
5. The second addition
6. Finished
7,8. The third addition
9. Finished
10. The first geese to admire the project
11, 12. The fourth addition
13. Finished
14,15. The fifth addition
16. Finished
17. The sixth addition
18. FINITO

When I was there on Sunday, there were no more curved steel girders on the ground, so I guess construction is complete.
When I saw how rusty the girders were originally, I thought they would get coated or polished somehow before assembly to make the piece look classier. Rusty steel on top of an old building doesn't exactly scream "luxury". Today, it appears they've built some scaffolding in/by the sculpture (hard to tell from here), but I don't know for what purpose. Perhaps Mr. Editor knows if spiffing up is in the piece's near future.
The images:

3-11+13-19
1. The yellow thing starts to come off.
2. It's gone and what looks like fourteen horizontal bars remain (currently: eight)
3. More luxury for the future 210 Main tenants! A giant over-the-air TV antenna has been added!
4. The antenna was removed because it didn't have enough rust to match the sculpture. Meanwhile, this huge man shores up the sculpture...............or it could be someone working down the street at The Hole who photobombed my shot.

Hey - they got the name on it: "Meridia".
They'd better change it fast:
October 8, 2010: The FDA finally recalled Abbott Laboratories' obesity drug Meridia today. The nail-in-the-coffin was a big new study showing that the drug can increase heart attacks and strokes in high-risk patients.

I haven't had a chance to shoot all the Main St-area projects on a regular basis lately, so here's what I haven't posted yet, mostly from 5-30-19 and mostly working my way north:
1. A stitch of The Record site (5-30-19)
2. 153 Main - where the furniture store fire was last October - was FINALLY cleared out sometime in May (5-30-19)
3. The Hole (170 Main): 4 shots from various angles, including a stitch (5-30-19)
4. 210 Main - Two shots of the road closure in front and one of a delivery in the back on 5-30-19
5. Current on River - Nine shots from 4-17-19 to 6-12-19:
a. C on R under NYC on 4-17-19
b, c, d, e. - The NW corner, the closed lane on River St, the SE corner, worker on River St side (all on 5-17-19)
f, g. - The SW corner, the view down Berry St from Main (both from 5-30-19)
h. - The view of 3 projects - including C on R - from the Hackensack Walkway at FDU on 6-3-19. Since it also includes the Anderson St Bridge, it's really 4 projects.

I'm working on a 6-project stitch that I'll post later.

I'm overdue.
I just don't go out when it's hot and humid, but Sunday morning was so nice, I spent about 3 hours and must have walked 3-4 miles as I traversed Main St from Anderson to Essex and back with a side trip into Bogota, shooting almost ALL of the ongoing projects, so I can hibernate again for another month or two.
There's so much stuff, I'm gonna have to make 4 posts (there's a 20-image limit per post). Although I didn't shoot them in this order, I'm listing them sequentially from south to north. I shot a few other things that caught my eye, so I'm just going to intersperse them within the sequence.
The Bogota project has its own topic, so here's everything else:
The Alfred and Mary Sanzari Garden
This is that little pocket park at Main and Essex across from the Bergen County Courthouse.

3. Odd stitch showing the north side of 149 Main, taken from the back left side of the previous photo. Also visible on the far left is a bit of the 170 Main Project across the street.
4. Rear interior view of The Battleground store at 157 Main, the first store to the north of 153 Main
5. 149 Main's interior from the back
6. This was taken a few doors south when I was walking back to an alley to get me back onto Main St. 149 is the tall building on the far left. The long awning says "135" and the green and white sign below it says "Tati's Salon", which fronts on Main St next to the other end of the alley.
7. Meanwhile, here's what the alley itself contains: "Greetings from THE SACK". (do you know ANYBODY who refers to Hackensack as "The Sack"? I don't.)
8. On a somewhat sadder note, I thought The Battleground and Kids Rule were coming back after the fire at 153. Apparently not.

I'm not sure of the addresses of a couple of these so one or two may leak over the given boundaries.
1. This was behind 157 Main (The Battleground store).
2. "Dinning"? Oy! No wonder they went out of business.
3. This was right on the NE corner of Main St and Demarest Place. They had all those loudly-colored wigs in their windows.
4. You know where............and when.
5. What The Record site looks like. I think I recall reading that whatever's to be built would be on higher ground to preclude flooding. This appears to be that higher ground.
170 Main (formerly "The Hole")
1. I actually took this on July 16 from the steps of a building on Moore St, but never got a chance to post it. I'm glad I saved it because they've added another story since.
2. This is an easy project to shoot from all corners, so here's the northwest one at Main and Mercer.
3. The southwest one on Main St
4. The view from Moore and Atlantic (also shows parts of 149 Main and 210 Main)

This is The Meridia - a wraparound project that fronts on Main, E. Salem and Moore streets. I'm sorry, but I can't shake the knowledge that Meridia is the name of an obesity drug that was banned in 2010. I'm sure it's a lovely place, but the name is unfortunate.

3. The view from E. Salem and Moore
4. The view on Moore St looking back towards E. Salem
5. For old times' sake, I walked around the back of the above image to capture this contrast of dwellings.

A quick walkaround produced the following:
1. The southwest corner on E. Camden
2. Same corner, different view
3. The southeast corner (River St and E. Camden St)
4. Open-door policy on 6 of the 8 apartments in this River St image
5. The rest of the River St side to E. Berry St.

Now the egrets. As mentioned earlier, I walked over to Bogota to shoot a WAY overdue update on the project that's replacing the old Hess tanks along W. Fort Lee Rd. On the way back, I crossed the street to get some shots of the USS Ling from both the concrete company and the Court St bridge. Those will be placed in the Ling thread.
When I got on the bridge, I noticed a large egret. I wanted to try to get some shots of it in flight because they're such graceful birds in the air. After taking a couple of shots, I noticed a second - and much smaller - egret. Omigod - is this a mother and offspring? The larger bird seemed to be watching over the smaller one as it hopped into the water and went for long strolls under the bridge. I couldn't see it, but "Mom" stood her ground patiently and after a long while, the smaller one came back.
I noticed a couple of differences that I attributed to changes that probably occur between fledgling age and adulthood. The beaks: the big one's was yellow and the other one's black. Their feet: the big one's were black and the other one's were yellow.
I like the fish-catching shots better than the semi-in-flight one. The last shot's a video still.
I spent about a half hour taking pictures of them before I realized that I was only halfway done with my walk and had at least a mile to go.
Today, I decided to send some pix to a birder friend to see if they were great egrets or snowy egrets. But first, I looked online to see if could figure it out. The first picture I saw had two egrets in it: one was large, had a yellow bill and black feet. The other was much smaller, had a black beak and yellow feet. It could easily have been the same "mother and child" I had just photographed...................but it wasn't the same anything.
The big one was a great egret and the smaller one was a snowy egret! I had simply photographed two different types of egret that just happened to be hanging out between the Court St Bridge and the Ling.
So much for my touching "family" story...............but the pictures and video are still worth it (I think):

All in all, I'd say it was a pretty interesting and productive walk.

These images were taken on September 29, October 24 and November 26:
1. Comparison of the first two dates' progress: two more floors.
2. The 9-29 view from the tracks on Main
3. And now, the view of Enlightenment Giving Power is gone.
4-6. Other 10-24-19 views
7. The view down closed Main St from Mercer
8-11. Various views from Mercer St of cranes, the cement pumper and an airplane
12. Consecutive photos of the same load with changing bottom reflection colors based on what covers the building's exterior at different heights
13. Different load - and crane and the load are pure heavy metal.
14. The view up Moore St
15. Why Main St was closed
16. Could be a fan-shaped custom guitar, but more likely it's the just-poured-cement-floor-smoother-outer we saw in the 395 Main thread (may not be its technical name).

These are two interesting things I videod while taking stills around the building on 10-24:

50 Main
1-4. The first picture was taken on October 24 and the rest on November 26. Pic #2 was supposed to look as good as Pic #1, but it's got an unfortunate glitch in the middle of it. #3's a little straighter and #4 is passable.
153 Main (from 9-29)
5. This is where the furniture store fire was last year. I heard a rumor that someone wants to buy this space and all the stores on that side of Main up to Mercer St so that another huge building - just like the one across the street at 150-170 Main - can be built. Anyone know if that's true?
210 Main
6,7. These were taken on 10-24 and 11-26 in the back (Moore St side). What's being built there?
8. Looking inside the back door of 210 Main
Current on River
9. The SE corner of the project on 10-24
10. The SW corner of the project on 11-26

11. Still pushing around dirt at 150 River St
The Hackensack Bus Terminal
12,13. While shooting the demolition at 133 River (white wall on the right), I thought I should take a couple of shots of the Terminal before it becomes another demo project. This place has more pigeons than passengers (but no passenger pigeons - they're extinct).

HAD to take advantage of last Sunday's 68-degree temperature and go shoot some projects:
50 Main
Up to the second floor. Interesting stitch and non-stitch:
76 Main
Nothing happening
153 Main
Taken from Moore St
170 Main
The first one was taken from home on 1-5-20 - the rest on 1-12-20. The LAST one was taken from the NW corner of River and Atlantic. As I was about to take it, I saw out of the corner of my eye a mob of pigeons take off from somewhere and was fortunate to get this shot.
210 Main
Stitch of what I had been thinking was going to be the bank's driveup window before I remembered that it wasn't a bank anymore, so I don't know what it is.
Current on River
The sales push is on (1 and 2) - the SE and SW corners (3 and 4) - and found in the parking lot on the western periphery (and missing 2 letters).
The Record
The first stitch was taken from Moore St. The other two pix - including the ugly stitch - were taken from the southern border of the property where the driveway leads you either to the Heritage Diner or the locked gate where the two tollbooth-like structures stand and used to lead to The Record's parking lots.

On Wednesday morning, a second crane was visible at the 150-170 Main site. It must have been a changing of the guard, because by Wednesday afternoon, only the newcomer was seen.
After that.............nada.

If you thought I was far behind in the 389 Main post, I'm WAY behind in the Projects post (which contains 8 different projects).
Let's take them one at a time starting at 50 Main and working our way north.
These shots cover 4 visits over the last 6+ months - a chance to see some progression.
The dates are under each picture.

-
I wasn't aware of what this building was to be called, but the name and color scheme seem to be pretty appropriate, given the history of the location..............but only if the rent was 5 or 10 cents a month.

Many of these were taken from home, but it shows the color progression pretty well.
The last 2 images were taken from Foschini Park.

There are some good pairings here. All dates are under each image.
First two: front entrance
Next two: off to one side of the front entrance
Next two: off to the other side of the front entrance
Next two: the back entrance on Moore St
Next two: new additions to that rear entrance
(Remind you of anything?)
Last one: some sort of relaxation area just south of the building on Moore St. Enjoy the soothing sounds of the Susquehanna freight trains rumbling through very close by.
As usual, click to enlarge.

Not much new to see here - I think I'm done with this one.

This one's winding down too.
That last double-image seems to have current running through Current and then not (solar powered?).
Click to enlarge (which you've probably figured out usually means only the horizontal images).

Here are 5 months of boredom in 3 shots.............well, actually 7 shots (the stitch takes up 5 of them).
