Sand Pond Society - http://www.sandpondsociety.org

We are a community of former and current Scouts and Scouters, including past and current campers, volunteers and staff members who wish to promote enthusiasm about the camp and the camp’s mission, serve as a positive and constructive environment for continuing camp friendships and reconnecting with people who were active at the camp, as well as to serve as a conduit for our community to continue to improve the camp.

We are seeking past and current stories, pictures for a future published book to commemorate the eventual 85th Anniversary in 2012. Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco has been a part of many lives within the community of Hackensack (and mostly Bergen County) since opening in 1927.

As such, the content of this site is limited to camp-related subjects. Registration with this site is necessary to view and participate in the content of this site.

Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco has operated continuously since the summer of 1927. Situated alongside the Kittatinny Ridge, the camp is actively used not only by the Scouting community of northern New Jersey, but also the rest of the state, Pennsylvania, New York, and beyond. Our summer camp program and food is not to be beat and our outstanding facilities are perfect for winter camping and events.

Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco operates at or near capacity for six weeks every summer, as well as each weekend throughout the remainder of the year. Owned and operated by the Northern NJ Council, BSA, the camp is easily one of the most popular and best-loved Boy Scout camps in the state.

The camp encompasses 380+ acres, and is virtually surrounded by the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, as well as by Green Acres projects of the State of New Jersey. Access through these properties extends the true possibility for our campers to over 112,250 acres of public land, including the Blair Creek Preserve, Worthington State Forest, Stokes State Forest, High Point State Park, and the Flatbrook-Roy, Walpack, and Hainesville Wildlife Management Areas. The Appalachian Trail runs immediately adjacent to the camp property. The Delaware River is located three miles away.

The camp has also been as a launching point for canoe trips on the Delaware River, and other lakes within the northwestern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania area, as well as rock-climbing activities within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Aside from our own Sand Pond, at least four other lakes are within day-hiking distance of the camp. The camp is also a very short drive from Swartswood State Park, White Lake Wildlife Management Area, and Jenny Jump State Forest.

Although many of our members are also members of the Boy Scouts of America, and although our mission complements the goals of the Northern NJ Council, this is not an official site of the Boy Scouts of America or of the Northern NJ Council.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Overcrowding - Illegal Students

It wont get done simply because that would be reduction in staffing due to student reduction and the BOE budget would have to come down and your taxes would be cheaper.

Its easier to let the system run amuk and raise everyone's taxes as needed.

Strap in - the tax reassesment is coming!

And yet some how the Bush Administration continues not to fund the Federal program that started this mess.

Local school taxes continue to climb - but for what?.  Over the last few years the increases only support existing programs, health benefits costs or unexpected special ed students coming into the district. The money is not flowing right.

There was a golf course or range on the location of Nellie K Parker school (Maple Hill School) too - right?

I had a childhood neighbor for years insisting on this.

the winning candidates have failed to say whom they favor for mayor

no one expected the deafening silence

Does anyone else find this odd?  Should residents expect to get more of the same type of response on future city issues / business? Where's the leadership we were promised?

Any chance Mayor Zisa continues at the helm? It would certainly change the rumors of him becoming the next City Manager.

But we will find out Friday, when they'll be sworn in and announce their choice.

Then again we may not - I believe I read a previous post that the newly elected city council has 30 days from July 1st.

Less than half of the city voted.  Wow.

Were all the phone calls, negative attacks, repetative mailings worth it?

Somehow after all this, I managed to convince my wife to vote. So she heads out to vote and was greeted (no thats too nice), was harassed by supporters of "New Visions" and "Citizens for Change" and given one last piece of paperwork by both as she heads in to vote.

As she registers to vote, a voting volunteer attacks her for bringing in the flyers that were just handed to her.

The fact that both parties were heading off voters with more propaganda as they head to the voting booths is distrubing. The way this mayoral race has run - I don't find this surprising despite the passing of Mr. DeFalco. How is anyone suppose to feel comfortable voting?

My wife pays barely enough attention to the political races to decide who to vote for. She's completely disgusted how city residents turned on each other and has vowed she may never take part in elections again. I cant blame her.

Mr. DeFalco was my athletic director in high school. He knew practically every student that took part in any sport is school. Basketball / Football were the dominating sports - but he always acknowledge everyone else too. One of the few that always supported and kept tabs on the other sports/athletes in school.

I think the campaign short changed who he was and capable of accomplishing for Hackensack.

What's the status on Mariner Bank construction (former Texaco gas station) at  Essex / Polify Rd?

Add to the list the now vacant gas stations on Summit / Essex St and Polify Rd / Rt 80 On-Ramp.

Al,

Are the new clothing drop boxes (yellow boxes by "Planet Aid") legitimate that appear at our newest vacant former gas stations on Summit / Essex St. (former Amoco) and Polify Rd (former Exxon Station)?

Hackensack Discussion / Property Taxes

Whatever the outcome of today's mayor and council race - its time to move on to the next election race - Governor.  NJPolitics.com provides links to all who are running.

Since hardly anyone running for Mayor / Council focused on issues such as property taxes, I thought it was worth bringing to focus a political race that will.

I'm trying to gather any or all information regarding property taxes from candidates wanting to run for governor.

The more I look into this - property taxes appear to be a Republican issue in the race for governor.  With Corizine appearing to be the only front runner for the Democrats - I don't any statements on the issue by Senator Corizine from his web site.

I guess since Gov. Codey eliminated the property tax rebate this fall - its no wonder why Republicans are raising the issue.

I know its early to pick who to vote for, but Forrester sure knows how to grab one's attention. I thought the savings calculator was interesting to share. It may be nonsense and then again it may not be.

Bret Schindler - Property Tax Amendment Reform

After plugging in values for Bergen County and Hackensack the following was provided on Schindler's web site.

Stand Up for Hackensack!

It’s time we demand that our community receive its fair share of state funding!

Every year, as New Jersey’s economy grows, state tax collections grow.

State politicians spend these new dollars creating new state programs and adding friends to the state payroll.

Legislation being debated in Trenton would force state politicians to start sending a fair share of these new dollars to public schools, municipalities and counties to improve local services and lower property taxes.

Studies show the passage of this legislation would cause property taxes all throughout New Jersey to fall year after year after year.

Had these “Permanent Property Tax Reduction Amendments” been passed last year:

Hackensack’s public schools would already be receiving $4,403,279.93 more in state funding;

Hackensack’s municipal government would already be receiving $4,474,098.08 more in state funding;

Hackensack’s tax obligation to Bergen County would already have been reduced by  $580,731.14 this year;

And Hackensack’s property owners and tenants would already be enjoying $9,458,109.15 in total property tax savings!

Most property owners in New Jersey would have saved about 10% in property taxes this year. To find out what YOUR personal savings would have been, type your address into our Tax Savings Calculator at www.bret2005.com.

If you want lower property taxes, it is time to stand up for Hackensack and demand that our community receive its fair share of state funding!

PROPERTY TAXES

Our property taxes continue to skyrocket, rising out of control. Yet, the career politicians who fail to address the problem remain in office year after year.

As a local elected official and fiscal conservative, I know first hand that quick fix budgets and funding gimmicks (like bonding and tax increases) are useless. Until you cut costs, eliminate waste, and curb the political abuse of taxpayer dollars, property taxes will continue to rise.

I am an ardent supporter of shared administrative services among municipalities looking to lower their property taxes and plan to utilize cost cutting measures like this to create savings. Sharing staff and administrative duties, coordinated purchasing of supplies, and sharing public works, employees and equipment all create tremendous savings. Without ever touching local emergency services, we can accumulate substantial savings in the payroll, benefit and financing costs that make up a big chunk of local budgets.

Most importantly, we must eliminate the political deals and no-bid insider contracts that drive up the cost of government. It's time to throw the career politicians out and save taxpayer's more of their hard earned money.

I'd like to thank the "New Visions" team for littering my neighborhood with the door handle literature that was put out yesterday.

Was it really necessary to place this information on car windshields too?  We now how a litter problem, as most of the loose papers from car windshields are all over the neighborhood.

TO BOTH PARTIES for the future:  Please refrain from calling homes more than once.  Mail out less negative ads. Send out less amount of mailings too.

Perhaps a positive spun, future planning ticket may get more residents to vote in the future.

And do you or anyone else see this with "New Visions" being the next mayor and council?  I don't. These are people whom you claim are part of the distinct entity and that's what I find troubling.

1.  Why hasn’t the upcoming tax reassessment been mentioned?

2.  What’s being done to address the overcrowding in the schools or the possible takeover of the schools by the state?

3.  Why hasn’t a solution to the homeless problem and whether or not a shelter will be built been addressed?

4.  What happened to the construction of the county police station on the Goldberg site?

5.  Why do so many families in town choose to send their children to private or parochial schools and why isn’t anybody running for council embarrassed by this?

6.  What is being done to create harmony and community among the many cultures of people in town?  What opportunities do we have to share the richness of our diversity?  No parades on Main Street, no celebrations of heritage, just more wasted opportunities to set Hackensack apart from the rest.

7.  How are the recreation programs going to be reorganized?  Can the dedicated people that run the jr. sports programs in town check their egos at the door, pool their talents, and create a sports board that would organize all the jr. sports programs in town together?  (Besides football and track, how many HHS sports programs are CONSISTENTLY in The Record’s top 25?)

8.  At what point do we curtail the expansion of the Hackensack University Medical Center?

I couldnt agree more! Will we ever get these questions answered?

My biggest concern with "New Visions" is that with such a background in the city public schools - where's the investment return with our tax increases and where are the improvements to our failing schools? What responsibility do they have that has led up to our current problems?

Yet the suit accuses the government of shortchanging schools by at least $27 billion, the difference between the amount Congress authorized and what it has spent. The shortfall is even larger, the suit says, if the figures include all promised funding for poor children.

The suit, citing a series of cost studies, outlines billions of dollars in expenses to meet the law's mandates. They include the costs of adding yearly testing, getting all children up to grade level in reading and math, and ensuring teachers are highly qualified.

To cover those costs, the suit says, states have shifted money away from such other priorities as foreign languages, art and smaller classes. The money gap has hurt schools' ability to meet progress goals, which in turn has damaged their reputations, the suit says

Maybe school districts should build oil refineries so that the President takes notice. Think of the additional funds one could raise and the workforce experience students would have.
