THE LION IN WINTER

James Goldman’s critically acclaimed The Lion in Winter  is being presented by the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center and Boz and the Bard Productions, Inc. at the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. August 6,7,8,13,14,15, 20, 21 & 22.  The Saturday, August 21st perforrnance will be interpreted for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

The production stars veteran actress Karen Asconi of Bogota as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine and seasoned actor Andrew Lionetti of Westwood as King Henry II, and features Larry Kadish of New Milford as Geoffrey, Meena Dimian of Old Bridge as Philip, Amoy Christian of New York as Alais, Brad Fraizer or Manhattan as Richard, and introduces young Grant MacDermott of Teaneck as John in his first dramatic stage role.

Director Steve Hess and Producer Frank Avellino, residents of Hackensack, created Boz and the Bard Productions in 2000 in honor of their favorite writers, Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare.  Previous Boz and the Bard projects include Off-Off-Broadway productions of Like Bees to Honey and critically-praised world premieres of Marjorie Conn’s Miss Lizzie A. Borden Invites You to Tea and Warren Green’s Harry Consumed.   Their production of The Lion in Winter marks Boz and the Bard’s first full-length production as theatre-company-in-residence at The Hackensack Cultural Center.

Hackensack Discussion / Riverwalk and other Beautification Projects
« on: July 23, 2004, 09:53:23 AM »
As reported by The Record:

HACKENSACK - City officials have applied for two $1 million state grants intended to help improve the quality of life in the city.

One grant would help pay for a walkway that officials want to build along the Hackensack River. The other grant would help pay for a beautification project along Main Street, City Manager James Lacava said.

The City Council approved the applications during its Monday meeting.

Lacava said the beautification project could include tree plantings, benches, and sidewalk improvements for the city's downtown. Some have criticized the city for not doing more to beautify Main Street.

As for the walkway, Lacava said the city wants to build a section that extends from Johnson to Foschini parks. It would complement separate quarter-mile sections behind Costco and Pep Boys and the Riverfront Plaza shopping center on River Street.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Results of City Council Meeting 7/19/04
« on: July 20, 2004, 11:30:47 AM »
The City Clerk, Debra Heck, was in attendance. (far left).

Councilwoman, Juanita Trammell, was not in attendance.

In all fairness, I did not see a distributed docket when I got there just before 8pm.  It is possible that all the copies were taken before I got there.  If so, this is the first time that's happened since I've been attending the meetings.  There was a "master docket" posted on the wall.

Hackensack Discussion / Results of City Council Meeting 7/19/04
« on: July 20, 2004, 02:45:04 AM »
City Manager, James Lacava, was commended for his 34 years of public service (15 as City Manager).  The City passed a resolution of appreciation for Mr. Lacava's dedication and for "A Job Well Done". In addition, many residents wished him well and thanked him for his service.

The following summary is from my notes.  There was no distibuted docket.  As such, my report is sketchy.  Please report any inaccuracies and/or additional information.  All of the following resolutions were passed:

1. Johnson Public Library improvements: $400k, much or all in the form of bonds or grants.

2. $689K for general improvements (bonds).

3. Ordiance for sidewalk improvements (Approx. $600k).

4. Construction Safety Zones: $238k.

5. Refunds.

6. Emergency expenditure for water main break at Holt and Pink Streets $6500

7. Additional repair to fire ladder engine: $24k (There was an issue here concerning whether or not an official from the Fire Department certified the needed repairs.  The Council considered "tableing" the resolution, but ultimately considered the repair emergent).

8. Raffle authorization

9. Louis Garbaccio re-appointed.

10. Police Officer Mike Mordaga (correct title?) was granted a 12 month leave of absence to pursue work for Bergen County.

11. Insertion of $48k to Budget (NJ Depart. of Agriculture).

12. DOT grant of $1M for Hackensack River Walkway.

13. DOT grant $150k for Spring Valley Avenue improvements.

14. NJ Bikeway Program: $1M Main Street Improvement Program

15. Conversent Communications: approval of Operational License Agreement.

16. Bills Paid.

17. State Street School: Extension of Time request from DOT for improvements.

18. DOT $100k in "Safe Streets to Schools" Program.

19. Formal Resolution of appreciation for Retiring City Manager, James Lacava.

Public Comments:

Residents commented on the following issues:

1. Johnson Park Project:  One resident felt that much of the land reclamation (from the river) was unnecessary.  The new land, he argued, makes more room for unwanted geese.  Other portions of project exceeded expectations.

2. All Points Towing:  Seeking to obtain a permit to tow for the Police Department.

3. Redevelopment Zone:  Many residents expressed concern about whether or not the city should purchase additional properties in the redevelopment area and questioned the council on the process.

4. Home use certification: One resident suggested a resolution mandating that home owners certify that homes are being used in accordance with zoning (not allowing illegal apartments).  Some members of the Council, while questioning the legality of the resolution, seemed to like the idea.

5. Teterboro Airport: another redident inquired about whether any Hackensack residents were attending meetings in opposition to Teterboro Airport traffic and volunteered to attend.

6. Finally, Larry Rielly of the Boys and Girls Club, announced that the proposed Boys and Girls Club would accommodate Hackensack children only, not children from other towns.  Another resident expressed concern that the proposed Club would bring unwanted traffic from neighboring towns.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: The Ambiance...New Mid-rise condo...
« on: July 18, 2004, 02:45:16 PM »
In response to the last two posts, my primary purpose in developing  Hackensack Now was to promote a sense of community that seems to have waned over the last several decades. I'm sure this is not a phenomenon unique to Hackensack.

See: About HackensackNow.com

The site continues its slow, steady growth.

An article in the 7/16 edition of The Record indicates that NJ Transit plans to build a $4.5M parking deck "near Route 4".  Is this the lot across from Feathers?  Isn't that River Edge?  If not, where will this deck be built?

Story is HERE.

Recent article in the The Record about Ridgefield Park's new site:

Record Article

An portion of the article reads:

The new Web site is expected to bring residents up-to-date information on municipal meetings, agendas, borough officials, town-sponsored events, schedules, fees, and services.

"I think everyone wanted us to have a Web site," said Mayor Anthony Suarez on Wednesday. "It's our philosophy in government to have an open government. We want to get as much information to the public as possible and this is a great way of doing it."

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Boys & Girls Club proposal
« on: July 15, 2004, 10:19:00 AM »
Opinion in The Record (7/15/04):

I read with interest Columnist Lawrence Aaron's "Fighting for a place for kids to play" (Other Views, July 14).

Larry Riley was a neighbor of my relatives in Hackensack. I have never seen the man sit down. He has been and continues to be a tireless worker in his efforts to establish a Boys and Girls Club in Hackensack. More voices must be heard so that this dream can become a reality. My grandchildren attend the Boys and Girls Club in Lodi, and we certainly look forward to the day when they will be able to attend the club in their own town.

Larry's boundless energy in this endeavor and others is greatly appreciated.

Hackensack Discussion / Boys & Girls Club proposal
« on: July 14, 2004, 11:00:38 AM »
This article recently appeared in The Record:

Fighting for a place for kids to play
(Link requires free registration to The Record)

What's the consensus on the proposed project?

The article says:

[Hackensack resident, Larry] Riley's vision of locating a Boys and Girls Club in Hackensack has been stymied by the same lukewarm reaction the city demonstrated against other non-profit agencies. The city and county should be glad to give him a few dollars.

Is this a good project for Hackensack or simply one more county/state agency imposing itself on the city?

Perhaps someone would like to formulate a poll on this issue.  (Click "Poll" above to get started).

I've been slacking on city meeting reports.  I attended, but didn't post the results.  The last two meetings were short.  I'll post the results soon.

At the last meeting, Councilman Galvis was appointed Deputy Mayor.

I'm told the Planning Board Meeting tomorrow should be interesting as the board will reveal plans for a revitalization project in the vincity of Green and Essex Streets.  People may want to attend to voice concern, input, etc.

The Planning Board meets at City Hall, 65 Central, at 7:00 pm.

If anyone else is interested in posting the results of city meetings, please let me know.
