Well, that's over.

Some observations...

1.  Not one candidate contributed anything to the online discussion, although all of them knew it existed.  One candidate told me he would not contribute to the discussion because he did not want to participate in a "negative campaign".  With one exception, I think the posts were constructive, and did not amount to electronic "mud-slinging".  

One would think the candidates would have taken advantage of the cheapest, most convenient, effective and far-reaching campaign tool available, - the internet.  None did.  

2. Since no questions were allowed at the live debate at Nellie K. Parker (which was not widely publicized), I thought this would have been a great way to get some questions answered.  I wonder if more participation by the candidates in this forum would have changed the result.  After all, the highest vote getter for the "Better Education Team" only lost by 141 votes.  Could the "Better Education Team" have changed the minds of some of the 1000+ voters who visited Hackensack Now? Enough to make a difference?  

3. The poll results were wrong.  Although, from the extremely limited participation, I doubted the sample results could have provided any useful information.  I had hoped to predict the election. Maybe the poll in the Freeholder election or City Council race in 2005 will be more accurate.

4.  Only 8.3 percent of the voting population voted.  Due to the limited campaigning and lack of effort to get the public involved, I'm surprised voter turn-out was that high.  Voters without children in school were never even notified of the live debate.  

5. There was more participation in this topic than any other topic on Hackensack Now, by far.  More than 1400 views, and about 45 posts! People seemed genuinely interested in the discussion and the debate was organized and civil (with a few exceptions).  This, to me, is very encouraging.  Thank you all for your participation.

All of the following resolutions were unanimously approved:

3.   Approval of Minutes - April 7, 2004.

4.   Resolution #106: Final adoption of Ordinance 2-2004 (establishing salaries and titles of
municipal employees).

5.   Resolution #107: Approval of Refunds.

6.   Resolution #108: Approval of Health Department Annual Report.

7.   Resolution #109: Authorization to release performance guarantee.

8.   Resolution #110: Payment of bills

9.   Resolution #111: Emergency temporary appropriation.  

Official Comments: The mayor announced that the city will be participating in an asthma screening program which will take place at schools, parks and other public meeting places.  The program is sponsored, in part, by Hackensack University Medical Center.  More information will be posted soon.

Public Comment Portion:

Mr. Eric Martindale advised the council of the unsightly state of the railroad corridor between State and Union, behind City Hall, and asked if the situation could be remedied.  He also raised an issue about 1st and Clay Streets, although I was distracted I couldn’t get it.  Eric?…

Mr. Philip Roberts questioned the council on the S. Goldberg Property (proposed County DPW/Police HQ site) and whether the city could conduct a feasibility study to help determine whether the proposed site is better situated than the current site (in terms of tax ratables, quality of life issues, etc.)  The City responded that it had no such plans to commission a study and that the S. Goldberg site on River St. was clearly the better location for the County facility.

Another resident questioned which streets the city would repave this year and complained that many streets (even those recently paved, like Spring Valley) are quickly deteriorating.  The mayor shared his observation that this problem appears to be county-wide, perhaps state wide.  He opined that it may have to do with new paving methods that are apparently inferior to the old method.  

The next day, the city forward a list of streets to be paved in 2004.  Click HERE to see the list.  

It was a relatively short night.

TOWN HALL AT THE MALL

APRIL 24 IN PARAMUS

Prospective volunteers looking for ways to help our community are invited to the "Town Hall at the Mall" on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Westfield Shoppingtown Garden State Plaza, Paramus.  Coordinated by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County and sponsored by the Westfield Shoppingtown Garden State Plaza, the event will showcase programs and volunteer opportunities at approximately 45 area nonprofit agencies whose services encompass a full range of health, human service, animal welfare, educational and cultural needs.  

All of the agencies represented depend on volunteers to help provide quality services to the community.  Volunteer opportunities are available for people of all ages and abilities.  The Festival will be located throughout the Plaza from 10am - 4pm.  The mall is located at the intersection of Routes 4 and 17 in Paramus, NJ.

            The mission of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County is to strengthen the community by connecting people with opportunities to serve, operating model volunteer programs, building capacity for effective volunteering, and participating in strategic partnerships that meet community needs.
