The New Jersey-based Seventh Principle Performance Company, under the direction of Candace Hundley-Kamate and Yah'Ya Kamate, presents dance from an African cultural and historical perspective. The Star Ledger calls Seventh Principle "...a fresh take on African culture in a modern world." Seventh Principle takes it's name from the last of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, Imani (Faith).

Not for Profit Center for Modern Dance Education Announces Annual Fall Open House Week for All Classes.
Everyone Invited to Try Classes for Free, September 6-12, 2008


• All classes are free Saturday, September 6th through Friday, September 12th. Everyone is encouraged to try as many appropriate-level classes as possible - no charge until you find one or two or three you like! Call 201-342-2989 to receive a schedule of all classes by mail, or visit the CMDE web site at www.cmde.org to see the full schedule on-line. 

• Classes are available in a variety of levels to challenge the most experienced or to train the beginning dancer, no matter the age. Try Modern Dance, Ballet, Hip-Hop, Tap, Afro-Jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin Dance, Musical Theater, Choreography, and Yoga. Bring the entire family to try Latin Dance on Saturday, September 6th from 3:30-4:30 pm or try African Dance (Ages 8 to Adult) from 4-5 pm on Sunday, September 7th.

• People with disabilities welcome - separate and integrated programs are available, including the Moving Experience Dance Company for teens and young adults with developmental disabilities.

• All ages welcome - classes for toddlers through adults, including adult beginners and an "Elder Dance" class for seniors!  Classes for boys only, and for families!

• Register in person.

• All classes are coeducational unless noted.

• All classes are held at the CMDE studio located at 84 Euclid Avenue, Hackensack, New Jersey.

The mission of the Not for Profit, Center for Modern Dance Education (CMDE) is to promote modern dance in partnership with the community and make it available to everyone. CMDE seeks, through quality dance programs, to nurture and instill confidence and self acceptance in each student, regardless of physical or financial ability, including individuals with disabilities, youth at risk, older adults, and economically disadvantaged and under served populations; and to preserve the legacy of modern dance and nurture its future.

CMDE Announces 2008-2009 Dance Scholarship & Company Auditions
Saturday, September 6th through Friday, September 12th

Auditions for Experienced Dancers/Performance Companies,
New Dancers, People With Disabilities, and Boys

The Not for Profit, Center for Modern Dance Education is pleased to announce auditions for student companies and for special dance scholarships, to be held from Saturday, September 6th to Friday, September 12th at the CMDE studio at 84 Euclid Avenue, Hackensack, NJ.

Students wishing to audition for either a company and/or a scholarship should call the CMDE office at 201-342-2989 to reserve a place.  Times are listed by each scholarship or Dance Company. There is no need to prepare any material in advance. Expect a classroom setting and wear comfortable dance attire. Arrive fifteen minutes before the audition.

Students wishing to audition for a scholarship as well as a company may do both at a company audition, but must notify CMDE in advance that they also wish to be considered for a scholarship.

CMDE Junior Repertory Company
Thursday, September 11, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

The CMDE Junior Repertory Company consists of boys and girls, ages 7-12, who have had at least a year's previous trainning . If accepted into the Company, the dancer must take another technique class in addition to the Company class, and commit to consistently attending classes and performances.

CMDE Repertory Company
Wednesday, September 10, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

The CMDE Repertory Company consists of dancers age 13-19 who are at least intermediate level and have a strong commitment to dance.  If accepted into the Company, the dancer must take another technique class in addition to the Company class, and commit to consistently attending classes and performances.

Maya Kayla Memorial Scholarship
Thursday, September 11, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

This scholarship is given each year to one girl or boy age 7-14 who loves to dance.  It was established by CMDE's Founder, Shirley Ubell, in memory of her first dance teacher. 

Eva Bauer Gifted & Talented Scholarship
Wednesday, September 10, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

This scholarship is for a gifted/talented teenager.  It was established by CMDE Board President Ruth Bauer Neustadter in honor of her mother. 

Morris Leitman Scholarship for Kids With Disabilities
Thurs., Sept. 11, 5:00-6:00 p.m.

This scholarship is available to a child with a disability.  It was established by Shirley Ubell in memory of her father. 

Bruce Baker Boy's Scholarship
Saturday, September 6, 1:00-2:00 p.m.

This scholarship is given to a male age 8-17 with a strong interest in dance.  It was established by Bruce Baker’s parents in honor of Bruce, a Presbyterian minister, who studied and performed at CMDE for many years before re-locating out-of-state. 

Cliff Allen New Dancer Scholarship
Saturday, September 6, 10:15-11:15 a.m.

This scholarship is given to a child age 5-8 who has not studied dance before.  It was established by Brenda Tobias in memory of a friend.

Earl Ubell Memorial Scholarship Fund to Support Students with Financial Need

This fund was established in 2007 in honor of Earl Ubell, who co-founded CMDE in 1962 with his wife Shirley.  This fund helps support partial scholarships and work-study arrangements for people who cannot afford to pay full tuition.  People needing partial tuition remission/work-study arrangements should call the office at 201-342-2989 to apply.

Mary Poppins Flying Into Hackensack With Michael and Jane
Saturday, November 17th at 4 PM
CMDE Studio, 84 Euclid Ave., Hackensack, NJ
$7 Adults;  $5 Children and Seniors



Bring the family to experience this enchanting rendition of Mary Poppins inspired by the 2004 award winning London show and presented by CMDE’s own Saturday Workshop Performers.
Saturday Workshop is Children’s Musical Theatre, produced, directed and performed by children ages 6-17.
Cynthia Lydon, 17, Westwood resident and Alina Sodano, 12,  River Edge, choreographed the entire production and cast the show.
The non-profit Center for Modern Dance’s main studio will be transformed into the Little Theatre,  Saturday, November 17th at 4pm. CMDE is located at  84 Euclid Avenue, Hackensack

CMDE "Summer Stars for Girls" present “Making Choices”  a FREE Dance Performance
Thursday, August 9, 1:00 pm

HACKENSACK -   “Making Choices” will be presented Thursday, August, 9, at 1:00 pm at 84 Euclid Avenue, Hackensack, by dancers age 7-14 who are participating in the Center for Modern Dance Education's tuition-free summer camp,  “Summer Stars for Girls”.  The program is funded by the Bergen County Department of Human Services, and the performance is free to the public.  Call  201-342-2989 to reserve a seat for the performance.
        Joanne Koob-Brown, Teaneck resident, & Silinea Lucius, from Irvington Co-Direct “Summer Star for Girls,” a two week program which began July 30 and will end August 10th.  The two week summer arts and dance camp immersion gives at risk teens a pressure free and supportive environment to explore the arts and many dance styles including, modern dance, Middle Eastern and Hip-Hop.

“Summer Moves for Teens” Co-directed by Janelle Smith-Reed, Teaneck resident and Roger Turner, from Hackensack  began for a month July 30th and “Summer Stars for Boys”  7-12 will begin August 13 for two weeks, also funded by the Bergen county Department of Human Services.   Roger Turner and Jason Warley  from New York are Co-Directing “ Summer Stars for Boys.”  The boys free to the public performance will be presented Thursday, August 23, 2007 at 1:00pm at the Center for Modern Dance Education.

Where: The Nonprofit Center for Modern Dance Education, 84 Euclid Ave., Hackensack, NJ

Time: 10-11:30am

What: Elder Dance is for dancers and dance students age 60 and over. “[We will] concentrate on playing, having fun and learning to communicate with each other. The purpose is to recapture the joy of moving, the joy of dancing!” says Irving Burton, 83 year old professional dancer, choreographer, actor, mime, comedian and singer.

CMDE (The Center for Modern Dance Education) offers a variety of classes for a five weeks, “Summer Mini-Session.”
from June 18th to July 27th (no classes July 4th week).
The fee is $70 per class.
