Bob, thanks for the time and effort putting this together, and sharing. I have been gone from Hackensack for 35 years. A lot of changes since then.

I grew up in Hackensack, but have lived on the West coast for  the past 35 years. Unfortunately I have nothing to contribute to the site, except old stories if they are applicable to what somebody posts. I enjoy the site and appreciate all who post. I am disappointed that more folks don't post what is currently going on at "home". I often feel that if Bob no longer posts, the site will be discontinued.

I thought Huck Finn was across the street from the Heritage Diner on River Street. Might have eventually become a Roy Rogers? I Google mapped where I thought it was and it looks like the building still exists. Looks like it might have been converted to a bank at one time and now is available. The building is shaped as I recall, you enter in the center of the building and then there was a dining area on each side. Each end of the building was canter levered forward. I believe Shea Chevrolet was on the next block down, on the street behind it.

Please use alternate routes, either "street" or "avenue" are OK, but "lane" may be iffy until after 5PM.

Very sad. I did not know Homer but always enjoyed his contributions to this board. Very knowledgeable of the local history, and now I know why.  He will  be missed, from 3000 miles away.

Was thinking... "I wonder if he will stop at Record King, if it still exists, and if Craig is still there".... Lo and behold, his first stop. I went to school with Craig. Grammar school through High school. Also, you could subtitle this "Everything you want to know about Cisco networking".

My friends and I used to go there all the time. Would also go to Robin's Pets on Essex street. We always had pet turtles. Little green ones, painted turtles, snapping turtles and box turtles. Always checked out all the animals, was like going to a mini zoo. Used to be many of the department stores had pet departments too.

I remember both. I worked across the street from there about 1980, at Motor Age. I was never in the bar though.

Welcome back. Hope your feeling better. Your contributions have been missed. I used to work at HUMC when I was teen during around 75-77 time frame, as a dishwasher. It actually paid pretty good for the day, over $8 an hour for P/T work after school. Back then though, it was not a medical center, it was only a hospital. Guess that's just a term used nowadays though, like calling my vehicle an automobile instead of a car.

Wasn't World Imports on 17N in Rochelle Park? next to the Hole in the Wall? I think they sold some furniture and decorative items. If it's the place I'm thinking of they had a tiger skin rug (I'm sure it was fake) that as a kid I really wanted.... and no I am not a decorator or into fashion. Just thought it was real cool.

I believe the luncheonette was called Stelje's or something similar. I attended Hackensack Middle School from 70-72 an would take the
#80 bus to school. When we got dropped off we would walk over there and get a toasted and buttered english muffin for about 45 cents. I think at that time State street was still 2 ways, or maybe only 2 ways from Mercer St. north to Passaic. I recall folks unloading sides of beef from train cars in back of the Armour building. There was also the big bus depot across State St. from the Armour building and a small diner on the other corner. The "J&M" diner?

I recall a bar across the street from Martino's. Would just run in there occasionally for a 6 pack. Don't recall the name, rather nondescript.
