In addition, Mr. Peter Tucci was acknowledged for his efforts as Chairman of the Economic Development Commission and was applauded for his years of service.

The Mayor and Council presented the Main Street Business Alliance with a check in the amount of $9000.  These funds are part of the "Special Improvement District" program.  To learn more about this, click HERE.

The Mayor thanked members of the public for their attendance at the Johnson Park Revitalization Groundbreaking held earlier that day.  Click HERE for more information.

Members of the public commented on the role of the Economic Development Commission, the appointment of Judge Dinise who, according to one member of the public, was "too harsh".  The same resident also complained of mistreatment by Hackensack Police.  He sought an explanation from the City Manager.  The details were not clear.

Mr. Eric Martindale urged the city to look into temporary structures (storage sheds) that were placed on a property on DeWitt Street.  Apparently, these structures are not permitted.  Mr. Martindale also complained of illegal dumping near his residence and for the protection of an environmentally sensitive area bordering Coles Brook near Route 4. (Eric - feel free to elaborate.)

Finally, Mr. Martindale expressed to the Council the need for greater involvement in the "homeless" shelter issue before the County Freeholders.  He conveyed his notion of varying types of "homelessness" and stressed the idea that each type requires different services which are already provided by the County at Bergen Regional Medical Center.  The "band aid" solutions of a shelter in Hackensack, he argued, do not go far enough.  Mr. Martindale received applause form both sides of the podium for his comments.  You may read more about Mr. Martindale's opinion HERE. (Scoll down).

Mayor Zisa agreed with Mr. Martindale’s comments and opined that many recent articles that appeared in The Record do not adequately address the complexity of the issue.  These stories (and others on the topic) may be found under "Community Outreach News" on the following page: Community Outreach

The Mayor reiterated his desire to more fully discuss these issues with the Freeholders.

As always, I invite other attendees to correct mistakes and add information I missed in follow-up posts.

City officials launched what they're calling the "Johnson Park Revitalization Project."

Click HERE to see a small movie and photos.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 7, 2004 in the Park. The $1.3 million project will include the construction of an artificial-turf soccer field.

"We're very proud of this project," Mayor John "Jack" Zisa said in a news release. "This project will expand the recreational facilities of Hackensack, providing a place for residents to play soccer, enjoy the river, or just relax at the park."

Construction is expected to be completed by July.

Hackensack Discussion / Re:Historic District
« on: April 07, 2004, 12:45:57 AM »
I'll look into further but, in the meantime, answer me this:

Would you consent to having your home declared "historic" if it meant that you could never sell it to a developer at top dollar?

Should people be prevented from maximizing profits on their investment?

I hate to see older homes destroyed, but I would also hate any restrictions being placed on the use of my property without adequate compensation.

Ultimately, I think the fate of the Fairmount section will rest on the values of the homeowners that live here.  Who will sell out and who will remain?

More on this as it comes to me...

Half of the old Lowitz store is The Stealth Nightclub which I hear is doing quite well.  I ate their once and the food was good.  I understand the City administration had it's Christmas party there.

Hackensack History / Hackensack Recollections: Article
« on: April 05, 2004, 10:49:05 PM »
I found this in my travels online.  It is an interesting article on Hackensack in the 30's and 40's.

Click:  Recolletions by Tom Munday

I would like to start an electronic journal of personal recollections of the city.  You may post them here and let me know if I may then store them in a more temporary archive.  I would also like to copy any old photographs of the city and city residents.

Main Street: Opportunities and Eye Sores

If you are interested in any of the following real estate, please contact me or the number on the signs that appear in the pictures.

If you are a realtor, you can add a full listing in the Classified Section on these message boards.

Above: Available.  Anyone interested?

Above: New management seems like they are finally giving this property a facelift.  It was horrible under the prior ownership.  Stay tuned.

Above: This facade is okay, but too many window signs, right?

Above: Why did Sears cement all of the windows?  Is this a jail or a department store?  We should ask them if they could add a mural or some ornamental design.  Comments please.

Above: This store recently burned.  See Record Article.  Does anyone know what will happen here?  It should not be boarded up indefinitely like the property that follows.

Above: A Peter Tucci property. A Record Article recently addressed Peter Tucci's role in the development of Hackensack.  Click HERE to read the story.  (Requires free registration with The Record). This property has looked like this for years.  Until it's leased, it should be dressed up temporarily.   By the way, Naturally Good, seen on the right, is a great place to eat.

Ah,... much better for now.  Thanks Mr. Tucci.

Above: Former Lowitz store.  What's happening here?  Is it for lease? Sale?

Above: Available.  Anyone interested?

Above: Available.  Former Hackensack Bicycles Store. Anyone interested?

Above: These two are vacant eye sores.  Does anyone know if they are available?  Who owns them? They are next to the former Hackensack Bicycle Store.

Above: Available.  Anyone interested?

I hear Moss Lighting was purchased and/or condemned by the City to make room for a driveway to the municipal lot behind it.  Hopefully, this will increase foot traffic on Main Street.

Above: Fox Theater.  I understand this buidling is about to get torn down to make room for additional parking for Oritani Bank.  Click HERE to read a related Record article about this. (Requires free registration with The Record).

Above: Not a bad strip of property.

Above: One of Main Street's newest additions.

Another Peter Tucci property.  Vacant for years.  I understand it's available.  Any takers?

Above: Available.  Anyone interested?

Another new edition.  Good Luck!

Above: Available.  Anyone interested?

Above: A real "fixer-upper", but I think this corner property has tremendous potential.  It has tons of volume, one block from the court house, surrounded by great restaurants, including General Poors Tavern.  Take a chance!!  In the meantime, the property should be temporarily dressed up.  It looks horrible.

Above: Available.  Anyone interested?

Above: The brick face was recently completed but I'm not sure what's happening here.  Next to 3 Brother's Deli (good place).

Above: This was Relic Records which recently closed.  Read the Record article: Swan songs on Main Street

Above: Available.  Anyone interested?

Above: Chiller Theater and Relic Amusements.  It's a long story: Read the Record Article

Attn: HEDC:

All commercial real estate brokers may advertise on Hackensack Now for properties they are seeking to sell and/or lease in Hackensack.  There is no charge for the listing.

Hopefully, this will generate some interest in properties on Main Street, Hudson Street and the surrounding areas and help spur the revitalization effort.

Many businesses are thriving on Main Street and tremendous opportunity exists for furture Main Street entrepreneurs.

All real estate offers should be posted in the Hackensack Now Classified Section.  Images of the property can easily be added to the listing.

Please email the editor if you require assistance.

Hackensack Discussion / Services for the homeless...
« on: April 03, 2004, 11:06:45 PM »
An interesting post turned up on the old message boards related to the topic of "homelessness".  The message is from Aaron Mighty, producer of documentary, in response to a post from "Sam the Answer Man".

Sam wrote:

We’ve all heard the old theory that the homeless are lazy people who just don’t want to work, and are actually happy being homeless. That theory has gained new credibility...,'

Aaron responded:

Hi all,

As the producer of One Happy Movie (the documentary in question here) I just wanted to comment on the homeless man depicted in The Record’s article by Jim Beckerman in case anyone might come across this post.

The man’s name was Dee Dee, and he was not sponging off of the welfare system or any other government funded/tax aided program. He actually received a check monthly from Social Security, which he had rightfully earned for working as a lawyer for some thirty years. He was also a veteran, as were a number of other homeless we interviewed.

He was homeless for one reason only. That was so he could experience freedom as he felt it was meant to be. That made him happy! If you were to see this gentleman, who was so articulate, educated and well mannered, I think we would all change our opinions on the homeless.

You can see a clip of his interview from the film here:
www.onehappymovie.com/movieclips.htm

I hope we can all spread a little happiness as he has to so many.

Best wishes,
Aaron Mighty
