Hackensack Discussion / Re: You-Tube: Hackensack Dancer
« on: December 28, 2008, 12:13:38 PM »
Which Hackensack Dancer is this.

James is the original. I used to be able to see him from my apartment all the time dancing on the State St side of that social care building at Main, Ward, and State before he upgraded to Anderson and River (bigger audience).

I probably have video of it somewhere.

Where does the new guy dance?

Better late than never.

I just had some film - yes, film - developed and found this overview of Hackensack and the Columbus Day Parade's finish line that I took from my living room. You can see the reviewing stand on the right which contained all the local and state officials, including Governor Corzine.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: White Manna
« on: December 22, 2008, 12:37:44 AM »
Does anyone know if there is still another White Manna at Nungesser's across from the Hudson County Park on Bergenline Avenue?

As far as I know, there are only the two White Manna/Manas that the Editor mentioned.

Are you thinking of the White Castle at Nungessers that's catty-corner to Hudson County Park? I went there in the 60s and I'm pretty sure it was there a long time before that.

You could take the 165 bus from Hackensack and be let off a very short block from it.

You still can - it's still there.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: George Stimmel: Riverside/Foschini Park

The thing that's throwing me off is that there are what appear to be mountains way in the background, which would suggest that he's facing west or north instead of south toward the cement factory.

From the little I know of his work, Stimmel did not seem to be given to artistic license - he seemed to be almost photographic with his local imagery.

Hackensack Discussion / George Stimmel: Riverside/Foschini Park
« on: December 08, 2008, 03:11:12 PM »
I found this George Stimmel landscape on eBay.

Here's the auction: http://xrl.us/RiversideStim

The seller identifies it as "River Side Park. Hack", which I imagine would be Foschini Park, and thinks it's from the 1950s. That may very well be, but I'm wondering about those buildings and smokestacks (?) behind them.

Does anyone recognize them and might this be from an earlier time?

That's it! You don't have to give any information and no one will ever contact you. It takes two seconds. It's 100% hassle-free and won't cost you a penny.

How can anyone say no?

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Holy Trinity Alumni
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:50:09 PM »
I took these probably in early 1961. The 8A teacher was Sister Anne Roberta and the girl is Linda Guerra, whose father had a furniture (?) place on Passaic and Haynes that I think is some sort of religious place now. The smiling girl in the background is Kathy Gingras, who lived on Maple, up the street from the school.

Out that window behind her, I remember being able to see the motorcade for Richard Nixon as it went by, heading south on Main St. during the previous Fall's presidential campaign.

Sister Rose Felicia was the 8B teacher.

Mom strikes again!

I just found the negatives for these. She took pictures in 1956 and 1957 of the old and new Holy Trinity School.

The first image is the old building where the parking lot is now. The second is the foundation for the new HTS. You can see the backs of the apartment buildings at 46 and 50 Anderson St. These were taken on August 9, 1956:

The next two images show the convent, which looks almost completed, and the school, which has a way to go. These were taken on February 25, 1957:

The "new" school, according to her Daily Events book, opened a half-century ago on Monday, September 8, 1958 ("half-day!", she notes).

I went to Clinton Place on Thursday afternoon and took these pictures with my cellphone:

These are not real people! Streams of reddish-brown something were continuously coming from those containers:

(It was a Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory scene, in case you were wondering about that something)

Hackensack History / Hackensack - A City in "Motion"
« on: October 31, 2008, 01:32:54 AM »
Mom strikes again!

I wonder if this June 1975 image that she took from a car on Route 4 indicates exactly what type of motion the city was engaged in.  ;)
