At The Record, editors are barking up the wrong tree:

so many trees are gone from Euclid Ave now, its hardly recognizable from when we grew up.  used to be one huge tree dead center of each property and one on each corner of the property.  80% are now gone.

I'm sorry, I don't understand.  I couldn't find The Record article online.  What did it say? Can you post it?

Yes, the street will never look the same.  I have pictures from the late 60's early 70's that show a dense canopy over the whole street.  They were mostly swamp maples, though some have said Norway maples.  The problem, of course, is that after 75 years or so, they become tremendous liabilities.  They can cut homes in half, destroy cars and injure people when they crash down.  We just paid $1800 to remove a maple on our property that was falling apart.  That included stump grinding. We'll also need to replace part of the sidewalk a tree limb damaged.

We planted four ornamental pear trees on the curb.  Not quite as "majestic", but more managable over the long term.

remember those days, you couldnt stand in the middle of the street and see the sky.  all those trees were planted when they built the first two houses in 1893. only a few of the originals still stand.

http://eyeontherecord.blogspot.com/2013/02/two-hackensack-stories-for-change.html

In this link from today, it says, "This apparently is the first time NJMG has discussed what will happen to its 20 acres since The Record abandoned Hackensack in 2009."

In 2011, you reported (http://eyeontherecord.blogspot.com/2011/06/is-walmart-coming-to-hackensack.html) that a sale of The Record property to Walmart was imminent and that the deal was brokered by Jon Hanson - Mac Borg's good buddy.

How could such a supposed transaction happen without NJMG discussion?

Title: Re: Eye on The Record

Borg was smart to get out before Superstorm Sandy.  Knock the buildings down, landfill the whole property 3 to 5 feet higher, and then it's actually worth something to rebuild. This is the biggest single-site redevelopment in the history of Hackensack.  Build something to define the City, to make us proud. To energize the downtown center.  Not a Walmart, please.  And if a WalMart is proposed, go right to ShopRite to help lead the opposition. They've hated WalMart for decades, and they kept the WalMarts out of NJ for a very long time.

That post in Eye on The Record was based on information from an usually reliable source, but I am not sure the transaction ever took place. In any case, NJMG never made any discussions public or discussed them in a story in The Record. Subsequent rumors were that Wal-Mart would lease the land.

That post in Eye on The Record was based on information from an usually reliable source...

Fair enough, but the "usually reliable source" was referred to in the article as "an anonymous source", yet you criticized someone today in the 2013 Election thread for hiding behind "a single name or an anonymous tag" - even though you and most everyone else here seem to know who she is BECAUSE of the single name she uses.

So, complete anonymity is good, but barely-there anonymity is bad?

I don't know her (or you), but I do find these inconsistencies to be a bit troublesome.

Usually reliable and anonymous are not mutually exclusive, and as you might know, newspapers often use anonymous sources. But if you are going to attack someone's position in the run-up to an election, you should use your full name and tell us who you support. You may know who Regina is, but I and lots of readers of Hackensack Now don't know who she is.

Mr Sasson, I do not know why you are playing this game. We have met, in person, at the council meetings. I give my full name each time I speak. You even asked me to sign your petition - which by the way you cannot do on public property. So, just stop the silliness with trying to "out" me.

If full names were required on this site the Editor would be the one to make that call. And he knows who I am too! That information is not required for discussion. I apologize if you feel I attacked your position, but that's the nature of the beast called politics and no reason to try to "call me out". I am not running for council, you are.

<< if you are going to attack someone's position in the run-up to an election... >>

No position relating to the election was attacked. Nice try. (not really)

<< you should use your full name... >>

Seriously? If you paid more attention to what goes on on this site instead of just using it as a soapbox, you'd know it.

<< tell us who you support... >>

I wouldn't tell my own mother that. Why should I tell you?

<< You may know who Regina is... >>

From the very last sentence of the post you're reacting to: "I don't know her..."

Pay attention.

I can't ask for someone to sign a petition on public property? That would mean I couldn't stand on the sidewalk outside City Hall and ask for someone to sign my petition. I'm sure that can't be right.

Jimmy was doing caricatures of children at a County fair at Overpeck Park last summer in booth for The Record.  He did one of our daughter and captured her smile just right. He seemed like a focused, caring sort of person.  I wish him all the best.

I have enjoyed your attacks this week on sloppy work, embarrassing errors, and the fact that something as simple as basic proofreading is non-existent:

1. This is the latest in a series of embarrassing errors on the front page or in Page 1 stories under the inept supervision of Production Editor Liz Houlton.

2. More sloppy work by Production Editor Liz Houlton's wrong-way copy desk...

3. Is it too much to ask six-figure Production Editor Liz Houlton to read every headline and caption that appears on the paper's premier page or at least to have them read to her?

With her proofers' eyes riveted on the TV screen during the David Letterman show, how else is she going to prevent such embarrassing errors from appearing on Page 1?

I'm trying to widen my blog readership as I seek a seat on the City Council. The blog highlights how poorly The Record has treated Hackensack, and the impact its departure had on Main Street. I also highlight quality of life issues such as aircraft noise and the lack of street paving. If you regard those posts as "rants," so be it.

You quoted the editorial:

The editorial doesn't say, "Oftentime", which isn't a word. It says "Oftentimes".

I know..............you were in a rush.

Hey - remember this from the above post about embarrassing errors?

I am only aware of the Eye on The Record blog because of these recent postings on Hackensacknow.com.  I appreciate vsasson's dedication to the blog, and to reporting news and news about the news.  I respect people who show such dedication, even if he rants slightly from time to time.

I would be very happy to see the blog to evolve in the direction of reporting and commenting on real news in the Hackensack community and perhaps to change the name to Eye on Hackensack, but he owns the blog, not me.  That's his choice. We really don't have any independent blogs about Hackensack. This site, hackensacknow.com, certainly has its purpose on archiving news, and its a great depository for the city's history, but you have to be too careful about what you say on the issue of Ken Zisa and other matters.  It's not a true blog.

Even as Eye on Hackensack, Sasson could still comment on The Record.

I wish him the best of the luck in the city election, although I don't believe an independent candidate can win in Hackensack.

I am devoting more of Eye on The Record to Hackensack, as recent posts show.

Many people share the view that an independent candidate can't get elected in Hackensack, but if people split their vote, I believe it's possible.

Four of the incumbents aren't running, and I don't believe John Labrosse deserves re-election, so voters can vote for me, assuming I get on the ballot, and Labrosse's four running mates, freezing out the disguised Zisa-like slate.

Then, we can change the name to Independentville from Zisaville.

Victor since 2010? Three short years?? I have been a paralegal (certified also) for over 15 years, plus 5 years before that working in a law office. If you want to break the law, despite having been informed of the law, knock yourself out!

Where do you get off even suggesting that I support censorship. You censor quite a bit on this blog.

Parents sign releases whether or not they give the school permission to use their childrens' images. I am sure it was done for your stepson. So there very well may be an expectation of privacy on school grounds. Again, knock yourself out, see how many people you can tick off.

Editors undermine blogger's City Council campaign (from Eye on The Record):

The Record's first expanded mention of Victor E. Sasson's campaign for a seat on the Hackensack City Council appears intended to undermine his independent bid in the May 14 election.

On the front of today's Local section, Staff Writer Hannan Adely mentions Sasson seeks "to limit noise, step up traffic enforcement and boost tax revenue."

But she leaves to the continuation page Sasson's goal of getting that extra money from Hackensack University Medical Center and other tax-exempt entities, not from homeowners (L-1 and L-3).

Adely also omits that Sasson would seek a ban on "commercial" landscaping on Sunday and has no problem with residents mowing their lawn on that day.

The story is edited sloppily. It omits Sasson's middle initial, and is incorrect in stating his heading on the ballot, "Vote for Peace and Quiet."

Sasson believes that as property taxes have gone up, city services have gone down, and seeks to reverse that.

Adely also quotes an opposition slate's desire to "improve the quality of life" for residents -- a phrase the group stole from Sasson.

None of the goals of the slate, Hackensack Coalition for Open Government, would actually improve residents' quality of life, which includes reducing aircraft noise, paving streets and cracking down on speeders and stop-sign violators.

Sasson would earmark revenue from traffic violations and red-light cameras to paving such streets as Prospect and Euclid avenues, and Louis Street, and would urge the city to install speed cameras.

Sasson is a former reporter, copy editor and food writer for The Record who edits Eye on The Record.

This past Tuesday, one day after the filing deadline for candidates' petitions, there was a two-line mention of Sasson on L-3.

That a story about him ran at all is a miracle, given his criticism of North Jersey Media Group's  abandonment of Hackensack, and declining local news under head Assignment Editor Deirdre Sykes and Dan Sforza, her deputy.

Mr. Sasson, why do I need to start a Wordpress, Live Journal or another kind of blog or have an America Online account just to comment on your blog. I guess I can do it here, where at least it won't be edited or censored.

Because people like you who don't fully identify yourself don't deserve the right to comment.

It's the same rule for letters to the editor, the North Jersey Media Group Web site and numerous other online sites.

Nobody cares what you think, least of all me, if you are too cowardly to put your full name and reputation behind your comments.

How am I supposed to know that? If you hide your identity, it isn't sexist to call you a he.

There is only one registered voter in Hackensack with a name close to your tag: [Name and address removed by Editor for security reasons], a Republican who lives on [removed]. If you are her, that explains a lot.

LOL.

Title: Re: Eye on The Record

The names and addresses of registered voters are public information. I obtained the list of roughly 20,000 voters to help me gather signatures for petitions that got me on the City Council ballot.

The editor's motives for deleting that information are unclear, but he also doesn't identify himself, which to me is a huge problem.

And, yes, Mrs. Taylor, I would be more than happy to drive you to the polls.
Title: Re: Eye on The Record
Post by: Editor on April 15, 2013, 09:48:07 AM
My motives are very clear: Security.  Just because you have a list of peoples' names and addresses doesn't mean you should broadcast that information on the internet.

Victor: I've identified myself on this site several times.  Members who post here regularly know me.  I'm Albert Dib.  It's no secret. I live down the street from you.

Yes. I know we are neighbors, Mr. Dib, but people new to the site shouldn't have to wonder who the Editor is.

You are essentially a city employee as executive director of the Upper Main Street Alliance, and I see from a lawn sign that you support the Coalition for Open Government slate.

I'm not sure I am comfortable with someone who is an ally of past City Councils as the editor of a "community" message board.

Cheers

This is a two family house. My tenant has a right to display lawn signs as well. I have not made up my mind as to all five candidates yet.

I have been very careful not to endorse any candidates for office on this site. You don't need to try to do that for me.

"Editor" has been my handle on this site for almost 10 years now. I don't plan on changing it for you.

For the record: I am off today.

One was wearing a shirt with the words "Code Enforcement" on it and driving an SUV with the number "501." Was he on his lunch hour? I have no way of knowing. The point I was making is that they drove to the polls in city owned vehicles, not their own cars.

In his EOTR blog, vsasson stated very inaccurately that the Alliance was not participating in the upcoming "Taste of Hackensack".  He made no attempt to check with the Alliance about its participation. The Alliance is participating in the event.

Vsasson has clearly violated this site's Registration Agreement terms not to post false or inaccurate statements. As a result, all of vsasson's future posts will be screened. For the record: this is the practice he currently uses on his own blog, wherein he screens all posts for content.

Also, this "Eye on the Record" topic thread has overstayed its welcome on this site and will likely be deleted in the near future. I am closing posting for this thread now.
