Hackensack Discussion / BLeafe - Putting a Face to a Name
« on: April 12, 2010, 07:58:54 AM »
The front page of the Local Section of the Record has an article with regard to one of the first students to receive a polio shot.  If the Bob Leafe that is pictured in that article is the same Bleafe who shares his pictures of Hackensack on this site, it is nice to put a face to the name.  It is even nicer to thank him for his pictorial history of Hackensack.  So, thank you Mr. Leafe!

Hackensack Discussion / Karma Ratings
« on: June 25, 2009, 10:46:40 AM »
I noticed that the Karma rating system is back again.  It appears that almost all of the posters either have a "1" or "-1" rating and there is a clap or boo next to their name so that you can rank them.  Of course, my rating is a -30 there is also no clap or boo next to my name and only my rating carried from the old system.  Maybe the editor can explain to me why.  I would appreciate it.  When I comment, I may have a different opinion from others but I believe these comments are made to foster discussions of all views.  I don't believe that they warrant a -30 rating.

Hackensack Discussion / No Bid Contract on Sewer
« on: January 23, 2009, 08:26:22 AM »
I was out of town for 2 weeks and was told that the City awarded a no-bid contract to the Sewer Authority.  Is this true?  I can't find anything on this site.  Usually, you list articles and comments about these types of things.

Hackensack Discussion / School Superintendent Search
« on: March 05, 2008, 03:49:40 PM »
As a parent of a HHS student and a homeowner, I am very concerned with the decision of the Board of Education to lower the requirement that applicants have a minimum of 5 years of central administration experience to simply 3 years. With a school administration responsible for the education of approximately 5400 students and a teaching staff that is responsible for the education of a wide range of academic levels, it is imperative that our next Superintendent of Schools be qualified to provide our students, teachers and parents with the guidance to help us reach those goals.  We should search for the best and not settle for the minimum.  The Board search should be for a person with a minimum of 5 years central administration experience and a doctorate.  The candidate should be a person with no political connection to the school system and the appointment should not be subject to the usual cronyism and nepotism of the past.  We need someone who can think independently and not be in fear of being demoted, fired or even kicked off a ticket because they dared to voice what is best for our children.  Let's reach to be a blue ribbon school.

Why are school board minutes not published on line?

Hackensack Discussion / Voting Districts
« on: June 27, 2006, 06:53:30 AM »
In the last 2-3 years, Hackensack's voting districts have changed.  Who makes those districts and wards and why the recent change?  It appears that some wards are bigger than others.

Also, what are your thoughts on a city government in which each ward has a council member and at least one councilperson at large?

Hackensack Discussion / Hackensack Real Estate Threads (comments)
« on: February 26, 2006, 10:18:00 AM »
I think it is a great idea to publish real estate appplications and variances.  However, since it is suggested that no comments should be made under that subject, the information provided should not include the opinion of the writer as to whether or not he feels this is a good or bad idea.  It should be impartial.

Hackensack Discussion / Karma Rating
« on: July 20, 2005, 09:53:42 AM »
As you can see, I just posted the previous message.  I am a little confused by the Karma rating since I was the only member on line at the time I posted it and am the only one on line now a few minutes later and my Karma rating is -21.  My understanding of the ratings is individuals are allowed to make comments by hitting the clap or boo next to the comment.  What 21 members were there reviewing this the instant I commented.  None are logged on as yet.

Hackensack Discussion / Civilian Complaint Review Board
« on: July 11, 2005, 08:59:43 AM »
[Editor's note: This topic was split from "City Council Election"]

I believe the Record article "Hackensack chance" had a great deal of validity.   This is " an opportunity for the city government to ease the distrust and alienation many minority residents feel toward law enforcement and City Hall.”  Towards that end, a civilian complaint review board would be a move in the right direction.  Any allegations against a law enforcment officer would then be reviewed by a board made of both citizens and law enforcement officers.  While there are many great things in Hackensack, there are some that are not so great.  I think rather than alienating each other, we should move towards correcting the problems and working together.

With regard to the diversity issue, just walk into city hall.  That issue speaks for itself.  I believe there may be one African American inidividual working there.  I believe there is only one working in the municipal court.  The majority of African American employees of Hackensack work for the Sanitation Department.  It is not an issue of individuals not applying for the position or not having the qualifications.  I have spoken to many minority residents of Hackensack and many have applied but were not hired.  These issues need to be addressed.  If all of us truly are looking for Hackensack to be the best Hackensack it can be, be up for the challenge.  I am.

Hackensack Discussion / City Election
« on: May 09, 2005, 12:36:40 PM »
While I admire Mr. Joe Defalco as a teacher of the Hackensack High School, I believe that sole position does not qualify him to be a part of the Mayor and Council.  The school system and the governing parties should be separate.  As a life-long resident of Hackensack, I take pride in Hackensack and its residents.  I remember a school system that worked.  I know that Hackensack can return to that status again.  However, that challenge should be put to the school's and not the City government.

While some of you believe that Hackensack has been fair to the majority of its residents, please take a second look.  While minorities now make up the crux of Hackensack, they do not have the same representation in City Government.  Just go to City Hall and look around.

In addition, while the majority of police officers are not bad, there are those that wantonly practice police brutality.  This brutality spills over to law abiding citizens.  The New Visions use of the PBA and other police organizations to make it appear that there is a group that is simply out to group all police officers as bad is unfair.  Not every black or hispanic citizen is a criminal just like not every police officer believes that the rights of people of color should be non-existent.  The fact that the police chief believes that any organization that seeks to address  those bad officers must obviously be a political movement does not make it so.  Even if it were a political movement (which it is not), bad officers are bad for Hackensack.

I was not sure who I would vote for on Tuesday.  Based on the negative literature, I will now vote for the Citizens for Change.  I believe that you must first see the problems before you can correct them.  I do believe they can be corrected.
