White Manna, City Hall, the Johnson Library, and the Hackensack Trust Building on the SE corner of Main and Mercer - 4 nice unused and undated cards, but not as rare as the seller thinks (except maybe for the White Manna one) and not worth the $40 he's starting the bidding at.

540 River St is the current address of the TD Bank (formerly Commerce Bank), near Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts.

Take a look here: http://rkc.org/~rkc/test3/html/hbe/cbfcu/

I think the Union Street School might be a good candidate.

Unfortunately, during the morning of Saturday, November 25, 1950 a hundred mile and hour wind tore off sections of the building.  This misfortune marked the end of Union Street School. In 1952 the building was demolished.

These ruins predate the 1905 postmark.

The only "Hackensack" indication is in the postmark, so I have my doubts that the image location is here. The seller said it was "Hackensack, PA" in his description. I also find it odd that the image ID on the card doesn't mention the name of either the school or the town.

However, I posted it in the hope that someone knows something that neither we nor the seller knows.

The gold nugget has turned to pyrite.

Seller's description:

1905 Real Photo Postcard from Hackensack, Pa. [sic] showing the ruins of a school house! This 103 [sic] year old postcard does have a corner chip on the upper left hand corner.

Does this look familiar to anyone? Is anyone aware of school ruins in Hackensack prior to 1905? Is this scene even IN Hackensack? Did the fire cut short the seller's education, as evidenced by his poor geography and math skills in the above description? (If so, he'd have to be about 115 years old by now.)

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Tonight at Foschini Park

Besides the crappy cell shots, I took some video too and zoomed in on the explosions. While watching the tape on TV and hitting the shaky pause button, I took cell shots off the screen to see what they looked like.

Now I know.

Taking fireworks pictures from Union St with a cellphone is probably not the best idea (the moon looked nice, though).

Hackensack Discussion / Today at Foschini Park
« on: July 04, 2009, 04:21:06 PM »
In all the time I've lived here, I've never gone to Foschini Park on the Fourth of July. It was either too hot or I was doing something else, but today neither of those factors was in play, so I walked over there this afternoon.

I needed a break from a solid week of scanning the pictures of Michael Jackson that I took on assignment at two local 1988 concerts. It would be nice to get away from that for a while.

Here's what I saw instead at Foschini:

Hackensack Discussion / At State and Ward this morning
« on: June 26, 2009, 07:22:00 PM »
Pic 1: I heard a lot of fire engine sirens this morning and noticed a crowd of social workers and clients on State St across from Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare.

Pic 2: Some self-important clown - even though he/she had TWO other methods of egress - decided it was more important to make everyone move out of the way (those are taillights - not headlights).

Pic 3: No big problem in the building, apparently. The HFD left and everyone went back inside.

Geez - I went to Grades 1-4 in this building and now its successor is closing after 51 years.

I'm only 39 - how can that be? ::)
