Hackensack Discussion / Re: Property Taxes

That brief from The Record doesn't mention property taxes would rise 3.3% under the proposed budget or that the tremendous amount of untaxed property at Hackensack University Medical Center and Fairleigh Dickinson University's Hackensack campus are a tremendous burden on homeowners.

Victor E. Sasson says, Now that I am on the ballot, here is my revised platform:

VOTE FOR PEACE AND QUIET
VOTE AGAINST THE MACHINE
SPLIT YOUR VOTE FOR
THE FUTURE OF HACKENSACK

I am Victor E. Sasson, a former reporter and copy editor at The Record of Hackensack, and I have owned a home in Hackensack since August 2007.

Now, I am running as an Independent for the Hackensack City Council on a quality of life platform that seeks to rein in property tax increases and improve city services.

The election -- the most important in decades -- will be held on May 14, 2013, and my name will appear at the bottom of a column of 10 other candidates -- symbolizing how I will get to the bottom of things. You can vote for 5 candidates.

If elected, I will:

Work with Teterboro Airport to reduce aircraft noise, and work with federal officials to get a mandatory curfew on flights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Get Hackensack to purchase more efficient vehicles, including hybrids, for the Police Department and other agencies.
Explore government grants to add hybrids to the city’s fleet, and encourage the installation of more solar panels on city owned property.
Start collection of garbage and recyclables after 6:30 a.m.
Ban commercial landscaping work on Sundays.
Encourage police to establish routine patrols of neighborhoods, if that isn’t being done now. Get police to crack down on speeders, stop-sign violators and loud motorcycles.
Encourage the city to undertake a major program to repave streets.
Have turn lanes installed on Passaic Street, at Summit Avenue, and at other traffic bottlenecks.
Encourage the non-profit Hackensack University Medical Center to pay more to the city in lieu of taxes.
Stop a 19-story, long-term, acute-care hospital from going up between Prospect and Summit avenues, near Golf Place.
Improve the food at Hackensack High School, and encourage administrators to plant vegetable gardens at all of the schools to fight the obesity epidemic.
Encourage the City Council to deliver a property tax cut to residents by passing along some of the additional tax revenue from major building projects, and gasoline and electricity savings.
Call me with suggestions or if you need a ride to the polls: 201-488-3012.

Well, if commenting on the sloppy journalism or the lack of news about The Record's former hometown is hurling stones at the employees and owners, as you say, so be it. How can you say this is not what the site is for?

The Record's departure had a big impact on Main Street and the pride of the city, a story that I am trying to tell.
