Hackensack Discussion / Re: School Board Election (April 19, 2005)
« on: April 25, 2005, 09:13:07 AM »
If next year's budget lapse is already projected - why are we still electing the same people to the BOE?  Why doesn't Dr. Montesano take some heat?

The tax increases are simply keeping exisiting projects and programs in place. Where is the investment return to improve our schools (Middle School and Hillers)? Why do they continue to fail?

I'm getting ready to enroll my child into the school system. I have teachers telling me what grade schools to avoid and that its ill-advised to send my child to the Middle School - as if I had a choice.  Its pretty bad when teachers are not supporting their own school system.

Does anyone really see a challenging race for Mayor and Council this year?

All I see is information regaring the "New Visions" ticket ( gotta say - I didnt appreciate the negative attack mailing this weekend). Perhaps the spin talk that the County Democratic engine is funding this party is true.

Where is "Citizens for Change"?  An occassion ad or lawn ornament along the way - but that's it.

And the third option of two people - do you really think you have any chance of winning - especially if your slate is only two people.

Speaking of the County tax increase:

Bergen County Budget Approved

And for you NYC commuters - dig deeper in your pockets - fare increase of 10% by the summer.

Rail, Bus Fares may increase by 10%

If the state mandates that a school budget can only grow 3% annual now - expect this additional tax increase request to continue and climb.

There has got to be another way of getting schools more operating money than having to annually increase our property taxes.

All this and we have two schools failing state tests - a test that fails to accurately report what the problems are.  But that would actually mean that President Bush would have to financially support his doomed "No Child Left Behind Act".

How much more is everyone willing to shell out?  Don't forget the tax increase by the city and the "yet to hear from increase" from the County. And oh yeah - kiss your property tax rebate from the state good-bye too.

Hackensack Discussion / City Council Election - Use Technology
« on: March 10, 2005, 08:29:01 PM »
Here's a thought from myself and lab94:

Since we all know not everyone will attend a debate among candidates, why not include absentees with access via the web?

WebEx or GoToMeeting have the capability to provide real time presentations, online video / audio. Questions could be fielded thru the online session as well by email or chat.  The political parties can easily cover the cost of the online sessions.

With the use of our Middle School or High School auditoriums and studios, the audio and video needs can be addressed. The HS has a computer / technology club, that would probably jump at the chance to help. The entire broadcast could be recorded and provided as a resource on this web site or shown on the school cable channel.

There is still plenty of time to plan this and reach out to more residents. Residents that are not comfortable attending a public meeting or physically unable to would have another choice.

I am sure there are other options, but these two are the leaders.

Is there a potential conflict of interest with th HS principal running for mayor?  I certainly do not doubt his experience and community service to the city. This council ticket is very pro - BOE. The city manager is a former BOE member too.

Without seeing any agenda from any ticket running, my mind is open, but I have reservations regarding the BOE, its budget and annual tax increases. Does the city have any influence with the BOE budget and spending?

Which party ticket is going to discuss the upcoming tax reassessment? I'm convinced its one of the reasons the current mayor's ticket is stepping down. Tax reassessment is political suicide.

With yesterday's Record headline article on the state budget - this year will be the year of tax increases!

There is just over a month to go for the city council election and the residents have no idea who's running against who and what the issues are.  And people wonder why on 11% (I seem to recall) of the city population voted last time.

Record Article: Sun Powered Schools

Does anyone know if our BOE applied for this initiative?

This site would be an excellent central location for the upcoming BOE agenda and the City Council election.

All announcements, meetings, issues, tasks, could be posted here.

A virtual debate on candidate, issues, budget proposals, Resident questions, concerns asked and answered, etc. if you will.

All groups, running parties should be contacted. Finding out about a debate or BOE budget meeting on the same day of meeting is poor planning and unfair to residents.  Proactive support is needed.

With registration on this board now mandatory - email notifications can be sent out as well (I presume).

Guidelines by the editor should be drafted (such as - no personal attacks).

Hackensack Discussion / HUMC Expansion

Hospital readies plan for expansion

Does anyone know any truth to how much land HUMC actually owns?

A neighbor of mine years ago said they owned all land from the hospital of today to as north as Beech St (High School) and as far east as the railroad tracks.

Where does Mr. Montesano planned to get the money for leasing space?

I feel a burning sensation in my wallet. Oh wait - its almost April -which mean another BOE tax increase request.

I'd like to know from active PTA folks, any unplanned expenses that came up during year (and I know of a couple)  that will require more tax money from residents.

Dont forget - its a city property assessment year too.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Esplanade Park still a waste after 50 years
« on: January 31, 2005, 08:34:22 AM »
All this time I thought the land was owned, operated by the apartment complex.

Growing up nearby, I would have loved a developed playground here. It would have been much closer to my childhood home.

All those years heading to Maywood and Paramus parks, my friends and I would have gladly rode our bikes there.

All its good for over the years has been for playing field games.

With all the park renovations recently - how was this overlooked?
