Title: Most Dangerous Intersections for Pedestrians

The most dangerous intersections in Bergen County for pedestrians
(Hackensack's streets listed below.)

The list was made using data from 2009 through 2013.

10. Prospect and Passaic
Part of a three-way tie for tenth place, the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Passaic Street in Hackensack, saw five crashes in which pedestrians were struck, including one that resulted in severe injuries.

10. South Summit and West Pleasantview
Also part of the three-way tie, the intersection of South Summit and West Pleasantview avenues, was the scene of five crashes in which pedestrians were struck, including one that resulted in severe injuries.

9. Polifly and Essex
The intersection of Polifly Road and Essex Street is number nine on the list of most dangerous intersections. The intersection was the scene of 10 crashes in which pedestrians were struck.

5. East Railroad and Passaic Street
In fifth place, is the intersection of East Railroad Avenue and Passaic Street in Hackensack. There were three crashes in which pedestrians were struck, including two that resulted in severe injuries.

3. Golf and East Passaic Street
Hackensack has the three most dangerous intersections in the county. At number three, the intersection of Golf Avenue and East Passaic Street. Eight crashes occurred in which pedestrians were struck at the intersection, including one that resulted in a fatal.

2. Summit and Essex Street
The second spot is the intersection of Essex Street and Summit Avenue in Hackensack. There were five crashes in which pedestrians were struck, including one that resulted in severe injuries and one that resulted in a fatal.

1. Prospect & Essex Street
Just blocks away in Hackensack, the number one spot is the busy intersection of Essex and South Prospect streets. There were ten crashes in which pedestrians were struck, including one that resulted in a fatal.

the list above is incorrect.   we dont have an intersection Golf and East Passaic St. Golf Pl and Passaic St in Hackensack run parallel 2 blocks away from each other.     the intersection of Golf Ave and East Passaic St is in Maywood.


in looking at the link to the accidents,  I surmise that the actual location for #3 is Main St and Passaic St.  And not the intersection of East Passaic and Passaic on the state list in the link.    Main St is the transition point from East Passaic to Passaic St, and is milepost 0 on the county road system, as indicated in the list.

I would like the City of Hackensack to look at the traffic signal system at Essex and Prospect, and Essex and Summit, and compare to the data of where pedestrians have been hit over the last 10 years.  Make sure there are "no turn on red" signs, and perhaps add a few seconds where the light is red for everyone, for pedestrians to clear the intersections. Thank you.
