Title: Carmen's Old Stein Restaurant
Post by: localchapter1 on June 13, 2010, 09:37:23 PM
Hello,
Does anyone remember Carmen's Old Stein Restaurant and Lounge on 70 Hackensack Avenue?
Now home to DOn Pomodoro..
It was my Dad's restaurant and it was right across the street from the old Packard Bambergers.
I spent my childhood Sundays there with two brothers Christopher and Vinny Gragnano.
We had the best pizza, pasta, zuppa di clams and the sauce, it was the best.
I saw an online auction that had old matches . Does anyone have an memorablia. I would be
interested.
Thanks

At some point after Carmen's, I think that became Riverside Cafe.  I have the piano from Riverside Cafe.

Years ago, there were two plastic drink stirrers from Carmen's available as part of a collection here (http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php?topic=651.0). The collection was sold.

Why was it called "Old Stein"?

Carmen's Old Stein Restaurant was the place to go for pizza in the 40s and 50s. I still remember the taste of the birch beer served at the bar. It was the only place our family ever "ate out".

Before it became the Riverside Cafe, wasn't there an establishment there known as Joey's?
