The English as the national language amendment passed, 63-34. Both New Jersey senators, Democrats Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, voted against it.

Many immigrants view the whole issue the same way as Leo Battaglia, a Hackensack resident who emigrated from Ecuador. Battaglia agrees that many immigrants should make a greater effort to learn English. But he feels the amendment is mean-spirited.
