Title: Photos: A Teaneck segment of the Hackensack River Walkway
Post by: BLeafe on March 10, 2016, 06:18:14 PM
This is about the segment that runs from Cedar Lane (right by the Anderson St. Bridge) south to Kipp's Bend (where the river bends around Hackensack's Foschini Park).

I've been there a couple of times before (the last time was 2 years ago), but the thick summer foliage made it difficult to see much, so yesterday was a good time to take photos before everything blooms.

The first thing along the path that I shot was something I hadn't seen before, though I read somewhere that it's been there since 2010: a standing graphic titled, "Windjammers of Hackensack".

From http://richardkirkmills.net/artwork/3607315-Windjammers-of-the-Hackensack.html (the site of the man who created the graphic):

"One word poems are names of schooners that once sailed the Hackensack. The pictured schooner is a photograph taken at that exact spot around the turn of the 20th century."

Many of the schooners were used for shipping local products - like bricks - to New York City. Maybe he should create another graphic right next to that one that shows the old Sea Scouts barge that I recall seeing moored there 50 years later.

A little further south and to the left, I encountered this interesting group of buildings behind a fence that I think are connected to the Five Star Premier Residences of Teaneck (for seniors) on Pomander Walk.

The next picture shows a piece of metal whose original purpose escapes me. Further down was a sign for an offshoot trail that would lead to Pomander Walk. It also warns that this is a natural trail with steep slopes and uneven footing. I took it and saw what looked like a pile of dirt-covered snow - an odd sight to see on an 80-degree day in March. I climbed up the slope to see what was beyond the pile and saw a dirt road. Since I never did see any further trail that would lead to Pomander Walk, I'm guessing that if the snow piles weren't there, this dirt road would take me there. The picture is a 3-photo stitch. The tan and orange plastic bag is a Nice! touch.

If you're looking out towards Teaneck from the back of the Nissan dealership's car lot on River St, the area I was in yesterday is where Teaneck's riverbank starts to bend around to the east. I think they (used to?) dump leaves there in the Fall. All I could see yesterday while looking through the trees towards Hackensack was endless cars - it looked like a mall parking lot.

Let's hope that image vanishes in the near future.

Right at Kipps Bend is where the old Leaf Dump was and I believe the sheds were are part of the old Swim Club. The Eagle Scouts Barge listed badly for many years before it burned down burned down prior to 1968. Your Cousin Larry can be more specific with dates.

Thanks, Skip.

From my apartment, I've seen the truckloads of leaves that arrived there, but not recently.
