Hackensack History / Another interesting street question
« on: April 23, 2010, 02:38:22 PM »
Another street that always seemed odd to me was that corner of Essex and South State Sts. where there is a street sign in that parking lot that says Huyler St (which begins when the town changes to So. Hack) Last i can remember the two signs were there together almost parallel.

Yes, Seilheimer..that's right! I remember their labels were in sort of an "old english" style font.

Breslow's must have been before my time, but it sounds like the kind of place I would have liked!

Valley Fair was "The" place to shop when I was a kid...I never even saw a mall till I was a teenager.

A stream..really? You know, I never knew that...I never went on the "street" deep enough to see that, interesting..I must look for that next time I'm in Hackensack. Your info is great, thank you!  I'll probably post some more street questions later on.

There was a "sidestreet" off of Hudson called Maiden Lane, but it really wasn't a street at all...just kind of a shallow lot that looked like it was part of Hudson...anyone know any history on this?
thanks!

Ok I remember it now as the Court House Inn. A few blocks up across the street there was a beverage distributor...sometimes my friends and I would grab a bottle of soda from the racks that were close to the sidewalk as we passed by  :P

There was a movie made a few years ago with the same title...the one i'm speaking of came out in the early 90's and starred Jami Gertz. It's a "silly love story" (not my kind of film either) but as a Hackensack resident it's fun to see all the old places.
I happened to be coming home one night and saw all the commotion going on over on Lodi St and got to see a scene get filmed, so that was fun.

Did anyone ever go into the Print Room restaurant that was in the same building as Packards?

hmmmm...i'm not sure we're talking about the same one (or maybe it was called that at one time). the one i'm thinking of was right after Costa Bros, close to the corner of Lodi St i believe (or maybe closer to Pink St.) it was seen in the movie Jersey Girl, as the 3 girls walked out to Jackson Ave from behind it. if i remember correctly it had Pepsi decals all over the bottom of the building.

Cubby's was great in the mid-80's when they would have their cruise nights either friday or saturday. My best friend and I would walk over and look at all the cars and watch as they peeled out leaving.  Also, the had great a great nacho platter back in the day.

That had to be the woman who had the store...i don't remember exactly what the address was but I lived a few doors down from there. Another one was a little store on the corner of Broadway and New St....i think the proper name was Broadway deli but everyone called it Vic's.

I lived in Hackensack (before that So Hackensack) on Hudson St from 1978-86..then on New St from 1986-95, when I moved to NYC. I have many great memories of our city, including being ON Lodi St during the filming of Jersey Girl.
I went to Immaculate Conception school on Hudson St by Rt.80, and Bergen Tech high school (class of 85) had a few paper routes as a kid, and sampled some of the best Italian food from various deli's I ever had in my life. My neighborhood was very diverse, and I had a mixed bag of friends growing up, from all backgrounds. It was a simple time, and it was great.

On the Sopranos ( i believe it was season 2) Burt Young plays Bobby Baccala's dad and crashes his car into a sign at the site of a former gas station on River St just south of the Rt 80 overpass after murdering someone in a house (scene shot in Garfield).
