Kipp's Bend/the Hackensack River Greenway in Teaneck
« on: April 18, 2011, 05:26:26 PM »
From my living room, I've taken a lot of pictures over the years of Kipp's Bend and the trees of Teaneck behind it, so I thought I'd reverse the process. The Kipp's Bend access point in Teaneck is at the northern end of Terhune Park on River Rd, where you also can pick up the Hackensack River Greenway Through Teaneck.

The first picture shows all the information to read about Kipp's Bend, along with old maps and pictures, but it also shows one very perplexing image: if you look in the water at the Teaneck side on the Bend, you can see a face.

The second picture shows that it's.......Arthur Godfrey! What the hell is HE doing there?

I could find no mention of him anywhere and can't imagine why he would be there. I'm pretty sure he didn't ditch his plane in the river after he buzzed the Teterboro tower in 1954, so what could it be?

Anyway, since I could see this area so clearly and directly from home, I wanted to get a clear shot of my building from there - easier said than done. The terrain and the tree branches just made it really difficult. The third picture was the best I could do and it's fortunate that I didn't wait until the leaves were in full bloom.

On a side note, this shot is proof that the cell antennas on my building - you know, the ones that aren't supposed to be visible - CAN be seen from as far away as the next town!

I walked a bit north and found a clearing big enough to let me try another stiched photo - this one made of 6 hand-held images. Considering I didn't bring a monopod or tripod, it came out surprisingly well with only a couple of minor background glitches.

You can see (L-R): the Court St bridge crane, the Bergen County Courthouse, Foschini Park, the Prospect Ave high-rises, the YMCA, the First Presbyterian Church steeple, and Kipp's Bend.

Be sure to click it to see it full-size.

I walked a little further south on the Greenway, but didn't get far because the path was ponding from the 3-4" of rain we got the previous day. Some other time.

On the way out of Terhune Park, I made sure to get a picture of the Park Ness Monster.

From/On the Teaneck Greenway 4/3/12:

Two of the first three "From" scenes are aimed at Hackensack.

The three "On" pictures include a male red-winged blackbird and Pete Townshend's first smashed guitar.

Who knew that he flew to the US and hung out in Teaneck by the river when he was a child in the early 1950s? You learn something newly fictional every day.
