Burning up the parking lot: Hackensack store hosts weekly RC races

HACKENSACK — The whine of electric motors rang out across a scalding parking lot Saturday afternoon in Hackensack.

On a makeshift track, cars blazed alongside the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway line toward State Street.

There wasn't much room for the drivers to turn off the 120-foot straightaway. Luckily, their cars were one-eighth normal size.

Maj's Hobby Shop has been hosting radio-controlled car races in its parking lot for five weeks now. A group of about 10 men have been taking part in the electric car races, store owner Maj Banting said.

For many of the participants, the races are their first on a real track. George Alzamora, a Leonia resident who has been working on RC cars for about two years, used to race around traffic cones with a small group in the MetLife Stadium parking lot.

But Banting has set up a 120- by 70-foot course with rails, tight turns and a lap timing system.

"You're going to separate the guys that just play and the guys that are really good," he said.
