Good Cop, Bad Cop: How Infighting Is Costing New Jersey TaxpayersBetween 2009 and 2012, the public paid over $49 million in legal fees, settlements and other costs relating to lawsuits involving the police in New Jersey. HACKENSACK — Months after the city settled the last of more than 20 civil rights lawsuits filed by police officers during the tumultuous final years of the disgraced police chief, another officer has filed a legal complaint peppered with familiar claims of intimidation and unfair punishment — this time under new Police Director Michael Mordaga.
In the 10-page complaint filed July 16 in Superior Court in Bergen County, Patrolman Moise Flanagan claims he has been subjected to "repeated acts of retaliation" since he aided the investigation of a 2011 beating of a city resident that involved three of Flanagan's co-workers.
