The "old style" street signs
« on: January 04, 2017, 01:17:48 PM »
Happened to be going down So Prospect earlier today, here is an example of the street signs I had mentioned in another thread. Curious as to why this particular one was never updated...

Thanks for posting these photos, johnny g.  Brings back a lot of memories for me, as I grew up in this vicinity of Hackensack.

When I was quite young, the stretch of road between Essex St. and Standish Ave. used to be called just Prospect Ave. If I’m recalling correctly, the road was renamed “S. Prospect Ave” probably sometime in the early 1950s.  I remember when the name change happened, as we had an elderly neighbor who was griping about having to change his mailing address.

New street signs were then installed to reflect the name change.  From the weathered condition of the street sign in your photos, it seems possible that it is the original street sign from that era.

I'm curious as to why this one was never changed....like I had written in a different post there was one on Vreeland and Jackson that was also in this style, but eventually was changed....I wonder how many more around town there are and what the significance of these are, in regards to keeping them rather than updating. I wish I had a Hudson St one in the old style hanging in my house, as a reminder haha

So Saturday evening we were a little early for Lido's to open (yes, another trip...and I picked up the phone this time, NO dial tone!) A little cruise way uptown by Staib Park I found another one.

Johnny G.....next  time your in town on the corner of Linden and Clinton  theres a sign that has to be from the early 1900's ....I have tried to post a picture of it....but I just can't seem to get it to go.....The sign is being cared for I don't think its going to get taken down but one never knows....the one on Standish has been changed out.....

Went to B-W on Saturday and decided to look for it in person, in it's current state it looks like it won't be long before it's replaced

they put up a new sign on the opposite side of the street, but in typical fashion, only half a job...  put the cross street....  or no signs at all....
