Tracking the 389 Main St rehab project
« on: August 03, 2017, 09:15:01 PM »
So today was the first sign of activity on the site of the big State-Ward-Main project that I am not looking forward to. The site includes the big Comprehensive Behavior Health Care (CBHC) building, the Don Alfonso Restaurant, the Hanson Real Estate office and some Main St businesses

This morning, I heard some mini-piledriver sounds and saw the below image by the CBHC. You can see someone carrying a big borer bit. I later saw similar activity on the Ward St side near Main St. I have no idea what they were doing...........maybe planting charges for the explosive demolition of the building? What a shot that would be!

This is the separate thread where I'll post whatever I see every step of the way. Obviously, I won't be be able to see as much of whatever happens on the Main St side, but I have a very good view of the State St side from my living room and will document my vanishing river view as the new building goes up.

THE DON ALFONSO

That would be a pretty fancy name for the building.

The only name I don't want to see on it is "RiverView".   >:(

Since it is right up the block from the college, they could name it:

Thanks for the info, Mike.

1 - Last weekend, workers dragged all this cardboard out of the CBHC building. It sat there for a week.

2 - Yesterday, someone in a James E. Hanson truck came by and took it away.

3 - This is a wider shot showing the three main buildings: the CBHC, Don Alfonso restaurant and the James E. Hanson realty company that's not only carting away all the CBHC cardboard, but is also.............

4 - ............STILL OPEN! I saw at least a half-dozen people drop by to pay rent or whatever, while...............

5 - ............right outside their window, soil samples were being drilled out in their parking lot.

6 - A little later, a flatbed arrived to pick up the apparatus

Two months later, this is the first sign of change to the exterior of any of the three buildings.

These guys were here at 7am yesterday to basically erase the front of Hanson Real Estate. I took the third picture twenty minutes after I took the second one............all that was left of the sign was "RE". Eleven seconds later, that was gone. I took the last picture today.

1. Before the work started, they put up a fence in the Hanson Realty parking lot (but haven't closed it yet). This 3-image stitch was taken on October 1.

2. Since the gate was open, I went inside to do a 10-picture, greater-than-360-degree stitch while I still could. Some day soon, this view will never be seen again, since it might be the inside of a big building. One of the frames turned out to be out of focus, so I put my watermark there so you wouldn't notice it (yeah, right).

3. On October 12, I could see what I'm guessing was asbestos prep on the roof and the side windows of two businesses on Main St

4. By October 13, asbestos signs were up in the lot.

5,6. On the same day, I noticed vents atop one of the doors on the CBHC building. When I looked through the glass of the other door, I could see this hanging at the top of the steps.

7. Two days ago, workers were on both roofs.

I guess they're done.

The truck and the asbestos signs are gone. The roofs are clear of people and equipment and the windows on the Main St building lost their coverings.

The vents over the door are now just holes over the reflection of the First Presbyterian Church and the up-the-stairs look inside is back to normal.

A little later, an HFD Fire Prevention vehicle showed up, but I know not the purpose of the visit.

The asbestos remediation is done and a fence just went up around the project.

Can demolition be far behind?

This is a 4-photo stitch. Click to enlarge and scroll from the left.

These will be my final images before demolition starts. Since the red signs with the backwards slashes are now on all doors of the to-be-gone buildings, my guess is that demolition is imminent.

1. The view down Ward St

2. The view down Main St

3. The old view of 395 Main

4. The Main St stores that were spared - the 395 Main project fence ends to the right of EmbroidMe.

5. The State St side looks ready to go. This 2-pic stitch also shows the current 4-meters-for-3-parking-spaces view.

6. The Ward and State streets view (2-pic stitch)

7. The Main and Ward streets view (2-pic stitch)

8. The Main Street view (2-pic/1-glitch stitch)

I don’t know if the phrase “395 Main Street rehab project” is accurate.

I changed the thread name today from a longer one that only mentioned the State St side of it to the original link name of the rendering (and added "rehab project").

What's your suggestion? You're not still pushing "KNOW MORE VIEW", are you?  ::)

The original word I got on this was that the buildings were coming down in September. I was sure I'd miss it in November when I was unavailable and was positive that I had made it back just in the nick of time in December....................nothing.

This month, there's been occasional utility roadwork right in front on the State St side, but today brought:

1. Various fire vehicles

2,3. Fire officials going in and out of the restaurant and the real estate office.................and the water company showed up

After a couple of hours, everyone left, but I could see from home that each building had a new sign/sticker attached to it. Thinking that it might be a notice that demolition was imminent, I went out to see what they said.

4,5,6. The buildings are unsafe to live in.
