Getting tough on illegal housing
Jesus Galvis, a former Hackensack councilman, agrees that safety issues should be brought to residents' attention because landlords often don't inform tenants about hazardous conditions.
But he stressed that tenants rights should be honored.
"The inspectors should not go in the evening in large groups with the police," he said. "It scares the tenants. It makes people think they are against immigrants. The laws and regulations should be explained with a lot of bilingual information. The people should be treated with respect."
