The Salvation Army Hackensack Corps, known for helping the needy - especially during the holidays, when the group's Red Kettle bell ringers are out in full force - is now struggling itself. The charity is trying to find a home.
Operating out of a tiny temporary office in a Teaneck church since Sept. 1, the organization has had to dramatically curtail the services it can offer. It has been forced to temporarily suspend operation of its family food pantry and its after-school program, said Paul Valverde, who is a commanding officer of the Hackensack chapter, as is his wife, Eileen.
"We want to break that cycle of poverty," Valverde said.
