HACKENSACK — The city has entered into an agreement with an advertising company to replace some street waste baskets with recycling containers as part of a plan to go green and get credit for the effort.

"We entered into an agreement with Creative Advertising, and 30 containers have been placed mostly at bus stops and busy locations," said City Manager Stephen Lo Iacono. "Where there were garbage cans at those locations before, they’ve been replaced with containers with three recycling compartments."

The containers are for waste, commingled glass and plastic, and newspapers. The city receives credit for the tonnage collected, Lo Iacono said.

"There’s a benefit. We reduce our solid waste disposal costs, increase the amount of separation which encourages people to separate recyclables, and our manpower will no longer have to service those locations," Lo Iacono said. "That gives us the ability to put old waste baskets in other locations throughout the city."

There is local advertising on each container and the ad company will service the containers, Lo Iacono said. The city will receive a small portion of the advertising revenue that’s been placed on the containers, he said.

Lo Iacono could not determine how much savings the program will generate in terms of solid waste disposal costs. "We have to continue to grow the amount of recycled materials yearly," Lo Iacono said of regulations.
