UFOs in Hackensack would work...

Thanks for the photo info.

"Why would stability be an issue in broad daylight? I'd worry about that if it went below 1/60............and that's without IS."

My reference to stability was only regarding the zoom shots. My reference to a light meter was tongue in cheek.

Two features I like are the widescreen format and the surprising quality of the video capability.

Understood sir, no complaint implied just an explanation of my running off at the fingertips  ;D.

Hmm...No tripod needed...I envy your stability but it is obviously somehow related to the age of the platform. Did you shoot the long shots in an Auto setting or were you reverting to your analog knowledge days and controlling the F stop and shutter speed? , a wonderful choice provided by this digital photography world we now live in.

The ability of the camera to handle the varied lighting in the Passaic Ave/Union Ave picture is impressive. Sell your light meter on E-Bay.

You did say comments were welcome and I am celebrating getting my wings like Clarence the angel in the classic film It's A Wonderful Life....My posts no longer have to be approved by an administrator.

The SX 130 is an excellent camera and would have been my choice if Canon had it available as part of the trade in program I used to buy the SX 120.

My previous Canon Power Shot 60 had a problem that Canon said would cost me $130. to repair. They also had an SX 120 refurbished for the same price so I opted for that. Canon has a decent support system, they took the Power Shot back and repaired a color problem that they announced on their website as a recall after I had owned the camera a few years.

My only complaint with the 120 is it's lack of a viewfinder since using the screen in bright sun light is difficult at times.

Hackensack Discussion / Speaking if photography...

This sounds like a prime photo op depending on clear skies tonight. A Supermoon courtesy of our orbiting neighbor being at it's closest distance in 19 years.  Sorry about the advertisement it comes with the video clip.

Excellent photos. Welcome to the digital photography world.
I have been a photography buff for many years going back to developing and enlarging black and white film and thinking that cropping and pushing the film's ASA rating were the ultimate weapons available to the amateur.
May I ask what camera you bought? It seems to have an excellent zoom ratio and the clarity is great. Are you using a tripod for the long shots or are you blessed with amazing stability?
I bought my first digital camera in 1997. A Sony Mavica MVC-FD7 that stored about 20 photos on a 3.5" Floppy Disk and had a very good ten times zoom that was a nice feature.
I have gone through a few since then and presently use a Canon Power shot SX 120 that does a decent job and fits in a back pocket instead of a shoulder bag, a feature that has become my biggest priority.
I enjoy using a couple of free sites for editing and resizing and have a copy of an older Photoshop program that is far too powerful and complicated for my needs. Photoshop offers a trimmed down version at a more reasonable cost and I was about to buy it when I came across this on line editor which works well. http://pixlr.com/. Another is Irfanview  http://www.irfanview.com/

There was an article in the Record a few months ago saying that some Target stores would start selling fresh produce to be more competitive with supermarkets. That may be the reason for the renovations.

Thanks for the info. The pool I was asking about is definitely the one shown on the post card. My memory of it is probably from about 1950 or so. Does anyone know what years it was in operation?

There is another reference to the history of Johnson Park in this link and if anyone here is a NY Times subscriber you can read the entire article.

Hackensack Discussion / question about Hackensack
« on: March 17, 2011, 10:17:42 PM »
Was there ever a swimming hole at the corner of Anderson St. and River St. on the N.E. corner across from Sears where the park is? I thought I remember a place to swim there but I may be thinking of the one further North across from Continental Plaza.

I also remember the small amusement park and zoo that was at the location of the garden apt.s on Old New Bridge Rd. behind what was the Donut Shop,  also just South of one of the biggest auto junk yards in Bergen County the final resting place of a couple of my old clunkers that were worth more dead than alive and running.

In 1963-64 I worked for NJ Bell and our line crew was wiring the original Two Guys as it was being built. The place impressed me in that it was so big I watched a carpenter hammering at one end while I was at the other and there was a delay before I heard the sound. A big space.

Google provided a link to a Facebook forum that had a discussion about Frankie's Market http://tinyurl.com/4lukfwq

Some interesting info and opinions on the cause of the fire and the activities going on in Frankie's.

Google is what brought me to your interesting site. I was looking for some information on The Ivy House after the Record ran a story about a restaurant planning to have an evening of serving meals in the dark. Naturally I thought of The Ivy and it lead me to your discussion of Hackensack bars and restaurants.

a couple of area businesses that are long gone due to progress, in this case Rt.80 joining Rt.17.

The places I have in mind are Frankie's Market on Rt.17 in Lodi and Stumpy's Motorcycle shop about in the same area on the East side of 17 but probably a few years earlier back to the mid 1950's.

Frankie's was a great place to shop in a flea market type set up with merchants in stalls selling everything from jewelry to clothing and all things in between, some decent Italian fast food too as I recall.

Stumpy's was the only place to get anything related to motorcycles including helpful advice and interesting info from the man himself. Stumpy gained his name in an accident that left him missing a leg.

Harleys of all ages and values could be found at Stumpy's along with the N.J. State Police bikes that were retired when it was decided that the Chrysler 300 was a more reliable ride in all kinds of weather when patrolling the GSP and the NJ Turnpike.

Hackensack Discussion / Re: Hawk
« on: March 07, 2011, 05:08:03 PM »
you are providing National Geo quality pictures of your subject..great stuff.

We have seen "our hawk" dive down and take a dove in an explosion of feathers close to the back door, one second he was there and then it was just a few feathers indicating something had happened. Another time one of them grabbed a squirrel and held it in it's talons until it was dead, he then did a series of short flights to get it to the nest since the squirrel was probably equal to the body weight of the hawk.
