Well, if you think about it, I would have had to walk through the bees to get on their east (sun) side at that hour to get photos good enough for your discerning tastes, but you haven't offered me any of the combat pay that Queen Bee Hillary got, so until you do, mind your beeswax. ;D

I just read about it online.

I wasn't up that early anyway (or that foolish to go shoot it if I WAS up).

HACKENSACK — The intersection of Main and Anderson was the scene of a massive cloud of bees Sunday morning, forcing police to stop traffic until a bee keeper ushered the insects into a box, authorities said.

An officer on patrol and a few passersby noticed the swarm of thousands of bees at Main and Anderson streets about 8:30 a.m.

“Apparently it looked like a cloud, low to the ground,” said Hackensack Police Department Capt. Tomas Padilla.

Police closed the intersection and called animal control authorities who brought in Rochelle Park bee keeper Randy Zeberl who lured the bees into a box with a piece of old honey comb. Many of the bees were run over by cars and buses when they landed on the ground, and Zeberl estimates he captured between 8,000 and 10,000 in about 30 minutes.

He believes between 10,000 and 15,000 bees were swarming in the area, a phenomena that usually occurs earlier in spring, in late April and May. Bees swarm when the colony gets crowded and some of the bees leave with the old queen to find a new home.

“Usually it’s not in the middle of the street,” Zeberl said.

The queen cannot fly very long distances, so it is likely the bees came from somewhere nearby, possibly a building, a tree or Johnson Park. Sunday’s swarm was on the smaller side — bees can come in droves of 30,000 to 60,000.

Zeberl said he gets calls from all over the area, particularly in towns with old trees. Bees propagate via swarms.

A queen will leave a colony and about half of it will leave, following her pheromones. A new queen will hatch in the old colony while the new one is formed elsewhere with the old queen.

“This is a normal thing,” he said. “It’s something they do for millions of years…it’s the way of propagating the species.”

Anyone have any idea when the overly-lumpy block of Anderson St between Main and Union will finally be repaved? All I (rightfully) heard months ago was, "Wait until it gets warm out".

I think we're there.

I don't know if you heard about this yet, but an Osprey caused injury to 10 people in Staten Island this morning.

Just before 12:30pm today, I heard an Osprey coming back to Teterboro. I don't know if it was the same one, but I tried to get a video of it as it went by the top of our County edifice for jurisprudence.

From my living room, this is a very difficult angle to video from, especially since there was no time to open windows and screens for a clearer shot. On top of that, the screen had the sun shining on it.

I shot this on VHS and ran it through a VCR and onto my TV screen, which I video'd with my cell cam.

Despite all of that, this two-dimensional optical illusion still looks slightly scary.

A guy on eBay is selling a bunch of cleaning supply labels from the 1920s and there was a Hackensack one in the list, so I checked it out.

I don't know what "No. 6 JET" is, but the label has a zip code and an all-numerals phone number, which makes it 1970s at the earliest.

Nice try, pal.

And for that special occasion the restaurant in front (was it Sam's?  The Green Room??) was the epitome of class.

I think you're referring to The Print Room.

Last Saturday, I heard the sound of an Osprey and - sure enough - one was coming from the north, following Rt 17 into Teterboro.

Today, I heard one just after noon. It followed the same route. 10 minutes later, the same thing..........and then again and again.

There can't be 4 of them - maybe one was circling the area or giving tours. In any event, that meant there was an Osprey at Teterboro and I wanted to get some pictures.

I drove down Huyler St, crossed Rt 46, and continued down along the eastern edge of the airport.

There I saw.................FOUR OSPREYS!

Usually, there's nowhere to park there, but I found a lot with 3 or 4 cars parked in it by a fence close to the planes. I fully expected someone to come out of a building and start yelling at me..............nothing.

I REALLY expected someone on the tarmac - which was just on the other side of the fence - to chase me away when I started taking pictures from the fence with a full-size camera and a cellphone cam..............again, no problem.

The cellphone was limited in what it could do, because using the digital zoom makes the pictures look like crap. It's really only good for close shots and this was not close enough.

(Remember when buying a camera or camcorder: forget the useless DIGITAL zoom..........it's the OPTICAL zoom that's important)

The first picture is the only one where I didn't use the digital zoom, so it's the sharpest. I could fit almost 3 of the aircraft in the frame. The 4th was parked over to the right - closer to Rt 46.

At one point, about 30 airmen left the planes and walked across the tarmac and into a building. You can see 3 of them in the last picture, which looks as if I was hiding in the bushes (I wasn't). Rt 46 is in the background.

On a humorous note, I saw a quick photo shoot going on near the front of one plane. The subject was taller than everyone else and was in full uniform.

It was Mister Met. Let's see where those pictures pop up.

I think I got a shot of it with my adult camera, but I'm still shooting slides, so it'll be a while before I see those shots.

(5:23pm - I just saw one coming in to Teterboro following the same route as above - a fifth one? I'm guessing they're in the area for Memorial Day weekend events.)

Seller offers no date or location or even proof that this IS in Hackensack, but it's the same seller as the one with the 1911 photo of the HHS girls, so maybe these guys snuck out of the armory and were marching to the old high school to find the babes.
